Introduction

Context

Hello fellow explorers of the world! Our journey together is going to be incredible. Have you ever stopped to think about how nature works? Why do some plants and trees lose their leaves at certain times of the year and then grow them back? Why do some flowers only bloom during specific periods? These questions lead us to a very important concept: natural cycles.

Natural cycles are phenomena that happen regularly and repeatedly in nature. They are essential for maintaining life on Earth. Some examples of natural cycles are the water cycle, the carbon cycle, and the seasonal cycle.

The Water Cycle

The water cycle is one of the most important natural cycles for our survival. Water is everywhere: in rivers, lakes, oceans, in the clouds, and even inside us. But have you ever thought about how water does this "journey" through nature? It evaporates from the oceans and rivers, turns into clouds, and then condenses and falls back to earth as rain or snow. That's the water cycle.

The Carbon Cycle

The carbon cycle is another fundamental natural cycle. Carbon is present in everything that is alive, including us. Plants, for example, absorb carbon dioxide from the air through photosynthesis, which is the process by which they produce their own food. When plants and animals die, the carbon that was in their bodies is released back into the environment, in a process called decomposition.

Natural cycles are interconnected. Carbon, for example, is released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, are burned. This increase in carbon in the atmosphere is directly linked to the increase in the greenhouse effect and global warming.

The Seasonal Cycle

The seasonal cycle is related to the Earth's movement around the sun. It takes about 365 days for the Earth to go around the sun once. During this movement, the tilt of the Earth's axis causes different regions of the planet to receive different amounts of sunlight. This causes the seasons to change throughout the year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Natural cycles are essential for maintaining life on Earth. They help us better understand how nature works and how we can take care of it in a more sustainable way. Let's explore natural cycles together and discover how we can make a difference on our planet!

Exploring Natural Cycles

The Water Cycle

About 70% of our planet is covered by water, but only 2.5% is fresh water and most of it is frozen in the poles and glaciers. The water cycle is the process by which water moves between the oceans, the atmosphere, and the land. Water continuously moves in a cycle of evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff.

Evaporation is when water turns into water vapor in the atmosphere, usually from the sun. Transpiration is the evaporation of water from the surface of living things. Condensation is the transformation of water vapor into liquid water. Precipitation is water that falls from the atmosphere to the ground in the form of rain, snow, or hail. Runoff is the movement of water in rivers and streams, eventually flowing back to the ocean.

The Carbon Cycle

Carbon is an essential element for life on Earth. It is present in all living and non-living things. The carbon cycle is the process by which carbon moves between the atmosphere, the land, the oceans, and living things. Carbon is absorbed by plants through photosynthesis, where plants transform sunlight into food and release oxygen. Animals, in turn, obtain carbon by eating plants or other animals. When plants and animals die, the carbon that was in their bodies is released back into the environment, in a process called decomposition.

The Seasonal Cycle

The seasons of the year are a consequence of the Earth's movement around the sun and the tilt of the Earth's axis. During the year, the Earth receives different amounts of sunlight in different parts of the planet, which causes the seasons to change. In the Northern Hemisphere, spring occurs from March to June, summer from June to September, autumn from September to December, and winter from December to March. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite.

These natural cycles are essential for maintaining life on Earth. They influence the climate, the vegetation, the fauna, and even our health. Therefore, it is important that we understand them and learn to take care of our planet in a more sustainable way. Let's explore natural cycles together and discover how we can make a difference in our world!

Hands-on Activity: "The Cycle Journey"

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to allow students to better understand natural cycles, mainly the water cycle, the carbon cycle, and the seasonal cycle. In addition, they will develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will create a "Natural Cycles Mural". This mural will be an artistic representation of how natural cycles work. Students will use recyclable materials, paint, paper, and other materials that they have available at home or at school. In addition, they will have to present orally to the class what they have learned about natural cycles.

Materials Needed

  • Cardboard or poster board for the base of the mural
  • Colorful paints
  • Brushes
  • Colored pencils
  • Markers
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue
  • Recyclable materials (magazines, newspapers, bottle caps, toilet paper rolls, etc.)
  • Tape

Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research and Planning: Each group should research about natural cycles (water cycle, carbon cycle, and seasonal cycle) and discuss how they will represent each cycle in the mural. They can use textbooks, the internet, or ask an adult for help.

  3. Creating the Mural: Students will take the cardboard or poster board and, with a pencil, sketch the outline of the mural. They should create sections for each natural cycle and think about how they will represent each one with the available materials.

  4. Applying Colors and Recyclable Materials: After defining the outline, students will use paints and recyclable materials to fill in and decorate the mural. They can, for example, use crumpled paper to represent clouds in the water cycle, or toilet paper rolls to represent the seasons of the year.

  5. Mural Presentation: After the mural is finished, each group will present to the class what they learned about natural cycles. They should explain each section of the mural and how natural cycles are interconnected.

  6. Mural Exhibition: Finally, the murals will be displayed in the classroom or at school, so that everyone can appreciate the work of the groups.

Remember, creativity is very welcome! Encourage your students to think outside the box and to express their ideas in an original and fun way. This project is a great learning opportunity, not only about natural cycles, but also about teamwork, time management, and problem solving. Let's get started!
