Plural Senses of the Arts

Introduction

Art is a wonderful way for us to express ourselves, it is present in our lives in countless ways. When we think of art, we often think of paintings in a museum, but art can also be the music we listen to, the movies we watch, and even how we decorate our homes. Artists use art to tell stories, share feelings and ideas, and to make us think about the world in a new way. In our project, we will explore the idea of the 'Plural Senses of Arts'. This means that there is not a single way to interpret a work of art, it can have multiple meanings depending on who is observing.

Visual art, for example, is not limited to what we can see. It can also involve other sensations, such as touch, sound, and even smell. Think of an art installation that you can walk through and interact with, like a life-size sculpture or an interactive art wall. These are forms of art that involve more than just vision, they create a complete experience for the viewer.

Furthermore, art also has the power to connect us with other people. When we share our own creations or discuss other people's art, we are communicating. This can help us understand each other in a deeper way, and can also give us new ways to express our own ideas and feelings.

Contextualization

The 'Plural Senses of Arts' are important because they challenge us to think about art in a new way. Instead of just looking at a painting or listening to music, we are encouraged to experience art in different ways. This can help us develop skills such as critical thinking and empathy, as we try to understand the different forms of art and what they mean to different people.

Moreover, carrying out our own art project as a group will allow us to practice important skills such as collaboration and communication. We will have to work together to create our own work of art, which means we will have to share ideas, solve problems, and, of course, be creative! Additionally, at the end of the project, we will have the opportunity to discuss our art with others, which will give us the chance to practice expressing our own ideas and feelings in a respectful and thoughtful manner.

Art is part of our daily life, and understanding the 'Plural Senses of Arts' can help us appreciate even more the beautiful works of art that surround us. So, let's start exploring this idea together, and see what we can create!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Exploring the Plural Senses of Arts'

Project Objective:

Create a group artwork that can be experienced through various senses, encouraging discussion about the possible meanings and interpretations of the created work.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and will work together to create an artwork that can be appreciated in different ways. The artwork can be a drawing, a model, a sculpture, or another form of artistic expression. The important thing is that the artwork incorporates elements that can be appreciated through various senses, not just visually.

After creating the artwork, each group will present their work to the class, explaining the creative process, the materials used, and how the artwork can be appreciated through the various senses. It is expected that students discuss the meaning of their works, expressing their interpretations and listening to those of their peers.

Necessary Materials:

The materials to be used will depend on the students' choice for creating their artwork. However, some possible materials include:

  • Paper, pencils, markers, and colored pencils
  • Clay or modeling clay
  • Recyclable materials
  • Fabric, wool, or cotton
  • Paints, brushes, sponges
  • Simple musical instruments (such as a rattle, tambourine), in case students want to incorporate sound elements

Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

1. Brainstorming: Groups should start by discussing ideas for their artwork. What would they like to express through their creation? How could they incorporate different senses into their artwork?

2. Planning: Once each group has a clear idea of what they would like to create, they should plan the execution of their artwork. They will need to list the necessary materials and develop an action plan.

3. Execution: Groups will create their artworks according to the plan. During this process, they will have the opportunity to work as a team, solve problems, and make decisions together.

4. Presentation: After finishing the artworks, it will be time to present them to the class. Each group will explain the creative process, the materials used, and how the artwork can be explored through the various senses.

5. Discussion: The class will be encouraged to dialogue about the presented artworks. Each student can share their interpretations and ideas about their peers' creations, fostering respect and empathy for each other's viewpoints.

6. Final Reflection: As a final activity, each student will write on a paper what they learned during the project, the skills they developed, and how they will apply this learning in their life. This paper will be handed to the teacher.

Let's start our journey through the plural senses of arts!
