The coffee we drink in the morning, the pencil we write with, the paper we read on, the cell phone we use to talk to friends, all of them have in their composition some natural resource that was extracted from the Earth. Therefore, it is essential that we learn more about these activities, to understand how they work and how we can contribute to a more sustainable world.

There are different types of extractive activities, each with its own peculiarities. For example, agriculture is the practice of cultivating plants to produce food, fibers, and medicines. Mining, on the other hand, is the activity of extracting precious minerals, such as gold and silver, and non-precious minerals, such as iron and coal.

Another example is fishing, which is the capture of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks for human or animal consumption. Fishing can be done in freshwater, such as rivers and lakes, as well as in saltwater, such as the ocean. And there is also hunting, which is the practice of capturing or killing animals for food, clothing, or trophies.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to explore and understand the different extractive activities, as well as their impacts on the environment and society, in a playful and interdisciplinary way.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, student groups will transform into "World Explorers" and travel through different types of extractive activities. Each group will choose a type of extractive activity to research, create a mini puppet theater, and present to the class what they have learned about their activity.

• Colorful paints, colored pencils, markers
• Blunt scissors

• Sheets of paper
• Textbooks and/or internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members.

2. Choice of Extractive Activity: Each group must choose a type of extractive activity (agriculture, mining, fishing, or hunting) to research. The choices should be noted and delivered to the teacher.

3. Research: Groups should research the chosen extractive activity. They can use textbooks, the internet, or any other available resource to gather information about the activity, such as: what it is, how it is carried out, what natural resources are used, what is the impact on the environment and society, etc.

4. Creation of the Mini Puppet Theater: Based on the research, groups must create a mini puppet theater representing the chosen extractive activity. They should create the characters, the setting, and the story of the theater.

5. Presentation Preparation: Once ready, the group must rehearse the theater presentation. They should ensure that all group members are participating and that everyone knows what they will do and say.
