Since the dawn of human society, the act of labour has always been entwined with nature. It was through their interactions with the environment that early humans were able to survive. They hunted, fished, and foraged for food in the wild. Over time, they discovered techniques for cultivating crops and domesticating animals, giving rise to agriculture and pastoralism. In turn, these discoveries transformed the way humans lived and organised themselves.

Project Overview

In this project, you will investigate the concept of 'Work and Nature' across three distinct historical periods: the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Industrial Revolution. Each of these periods brought forth new forms of labour and interactions with nature, shaping not only how we live but also the planet we inhabit.

In the Stone Age, humans relied directly on nature for their survival. They hunted, fished, and gathered food and materials to craft their tools. In the Bronze Age, labour began to take on a more complex dimension with the discovery of metallurgy. No longer were humans solely dependent on what nature provided; they could now shape the environment around them. Finally, the Industrial Revolution marked a new phase in the interplay between human labour and nature. The invention of steam engines and the discovery of new materials enabled humans to alter their surroundings in unprecedented ways.

Time Travelers: Exploring the Relationship between Work and Nature Activity

Project Goal

The aim of this project is to enable students to explore and understand how human labour and nature have been interconnected throughout different periods of history. Furthermore, this activity seeks to foster teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and communication.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 4 to 6. Each group will be required to research, design, and present an interactive diorama representing one of the three historical periods studied: the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, or the Industrial Revolution. The diorama should creatively illustrate the type of work undertaken by humans and their interaction with the natural world during that time period.

• Cardboard or shoebox
• Paints, crayons, markers
• Glue, scissors, sticky tape -Recyclable materials such as bottle tops, ice-cream sticks, plastic bottles etc.
• Playdough or clay (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Research: Groups will research their designated historical period, focusing on labour practices and the relationship with nature. Library books, the internet and teacher guidance can be utilised.

2. Planning: After researching, groups should sketch out a plan for their diorama, deciding which elements to include and where to place them. Remember to consider how work and nature were interconnected during that time period.

3. Construction: Using the materials provided, groups should construct their diorama according to their plan. Be creative in order to make the diorama as realistic as possible.

4. Interactive Element: In addition to the diorama, groups should create an interactive element, such as a mini-game or quiz, which helps to further explain the historical period being represented.

5. Presentation: Each group will present their diorama to the class, explaining what they have learnt about the historical period and how work and nature were related. Presentations should be creative and engaging.
