Hello, little mathematicians! Welcome to another incredible adventure in the world of numbers. Today we are going to explore two very important concepts: Capacity and Mass. But what are these two words and why are they so important? Let's find out!

Capacity is the amount of liquid that a container can hold. For example, a water bottle can have a capacity of 500 ml (milliliters) or 0.5 L (liters). Capacity is measured in milliliters (ml) and liters (L).

On the other hand, mass is the amount of matter an object has. For example, an apple can have a mass of 200 g (grams). Mass is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg).

These two quantities are very important in our daily lives. When we go to the supermarket and buy a liter of milk, we are talking about the capacity of the packaging. And when we use a scale to weigh fruits or vegetables, we are measuring the mass.

Importance

Both capacity and mass are fundamental concepts for daily life and for mathematics. They are present in many situations in our daily lives, such as in the kitchen, at the supermarket, and even in physical activities.

In the kitchen, for example, we need to know the capacity of the pots to prepare our recipes. At the supermarket, we use mass to buy fruits, vegetables, and other foods. And when we practice sports, mass and capacity are important to measure our performance.

Furthermore, knowledge about capacity and mass is essential for us to learn how to solve mathematical problems, such as adding and subtracting measurements and converting from one unit to another. So, let's embark on this adventure and discover everything about capacity and mass together!

Practical Activity: "Measuring the Liquid and Solid World"

Project Objective

In this project, you and your group will have the task of exploring the world of capacity and mass. We will carry out fun and practical experiments to better understand these concepts. In the end, you will create a "Book of Discoveries" with everything you have learned.

Project Description

You will carry out four experiments:

  • Experiment 1: Capacity - We will measure the capacity of different containers using water glasses.
  • Experiment 2: Mass - We will weigh different objects using a scale.
  • Experiment 3: Capacity Unit Conversion - We will learn to convert between liters and milliliters.
  • Experiment 4: Mass Unit Conversion - We will learn to convert between grams and kilograms.

Required Materials

  • Several containers of different sizes (cups, mugs, bottles, etc.)
  • Water
  • Objects of different masses (fruits, books, toys, etc.)
  • A scale (can be a kitchen scale)
  • Paper and pencil to write down observations
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Colored pens or colored pencils
  • Glue and scissors
  • Cardboard or cardstock paper (to make the cover of the "Book of Discoveries")

Step by Step

Experiment 1: Capacity

  1. Take containers of different sizes.
  2. Fill the first container with water to the brim and pour it into the second container. Repeat the process until all containers are filled.
  3. Observe how many glasses of water are needed to fill each container. Write down your observations.

Experiment 2: Mass

  1. Take objects of different masses.
  2. Place each object on the scale and observe the reading. Write down the mass of each object.

Experiment 3: Capacity Unit Conversion

  1. Take a glass of water and fill a container (it can be a bowl) halfway.
  2. Using a spoon, measure how many spoonfuls of water are needed to fill the glass. Write down the quantity.
  3. Use the same spoon to measure how many spoonfuls of water are needed to fill the container. Write down the quantity.
  4. Compare the two quantities. What did you notice?

Experiment 4: Mass Unit Conversion

  1. Take a fruit (it can be an apple) and weigh it on the scale. Write down the mass in grams.
  2. Convert the mass to kilograms. Remember: 1 kg = 1000 g.

After conducting the experiments, you will create the "Book of Discoveries". In it, you should write down all the observations made and the results of the experiments. Use your artistic skills to draw the objects used and your discoveries. Don't forget to write the step-by-step of each experiment!

Delivery Format

The project will be delivered in the form of a "Book of Discoveries" made by the group. Each page of the book will represent an experiment, with drawings, observations, and results written down. The cover of the book should be made of cardboard or cardstock paper and include the project's name, the names of the group members, and the class.
