Practical Activity: 'Pattern Explorers'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for you, little math explorers, to learn practically about Sequences and Patterns. You will explore different environments, observe and identify sequences and patterns, and then create a beautiful poster to share your discoveries with the class.
Project Description
In groups of 3 to 5, you will explore the school and the surrounding nature to find sequences and patterns. They can be sequences of numbers, letters, colors, shapes, sounds, events, etc. Then, you will record your discoveries on a colorful poster.
Necessary Materials
- Cardboard or poster board
- Colored pencils, markers, crayons
- Ruler
- Blunt scissors
- Glue
- Camera or cell phone (with adult assistance)
Step by Step

Form the groups and define who will be the explorer, the observer, and the recorder.

Choose the environments you will explore: the classroom, the library, the cafeteria, the schoolyard, the garden, etc.

Observe carefully each environment. Look for sequences and patterns. They can be sequences of numbers (e.g. numbers on the classroom doors), letters (e.g. in the alphabet in the classroom), colors (e.g. in the rainbow), shapes (e.g. on the school windows), sounds (e.g. in the music that plays every day at the school entrance), etc.

Record your discoveries. Write down or draw what you found. If possible, take photos of the sequences and patterns you found (with adult assistance).

Plan the poster. Together, decide how you will organize the discoveries on the poster. Remember to use colors and drawings to make the poster more beautiful and interesting.

Assemble the poster. With the help of the materials, place the discoveries on the poster.
