Who has ever played the game of counting objects? It's a fun and common activity that, without knowing it, helps us practice addition and subtraction. For example, if you have 3 apples and you get 2 more, how many apples will you have? In this case, we add 3 + 2 to find out that we will have 5 apples. When we subtract, let's say you have 5 oranges and you eat 2, how many oranges will you have left? In this case, we subtract 2 from 5 and discover that we will have 3 oranges left.
The Importance of Addition and Subtraction
You may be wondering, "Why is it important to learn addition and subtraction if I already do it in my everyday life?" Well, obviously it's important to know how to count and add objects, but addition and subtraction go much further. They are the basis for many other mathematical operations, such as multiplication and division, which we'll see later on.
Furthermore, addition and subtraction also help us develop essential skills, such as problem-solving, logical reasoning, and communication. Who has never had to solve a problem that involves adding or subtracting? It could be when you have to share toys with friends, bake a cake, or even figure out a schedule for getting things done. Addition and subtraction are present in all those moments!

Hands-On Activity: "The Great Math Hunt"
Project Goal
The goal of this project is to allow you, little mathematicians, to explore addition and subtraction of natural numbers less than 1,000 in a fun and hands-on way. You will all become true math hunters, solving mysteries, collecting treasures, and learning a lot along the way!
Project Description
In teams of 3 to 5 students, you will each create a board game called "The Great Math Hunt". In this game, each player will be an adventurer who must travel a path filled with math challenges. The goal is to reach the end of the board and collect as many treasures as possible.
Required Materials
- Cardboard or poster board to make the game board
- Colored markers, pencils, and a ruler to draw and decorate the board
- Paper and pencils to record scores
- Standard six-sided dice
- Safety scissors
- Glue
- Old magazines to cut out pictures
Step by Step Instructions

Form your teams: Divide yourselves into groups of 3 to 5 students. Remember, everyone must actively participate in the project!

Create the game board: Draw a large game board on the cardboard or poster board. The board should have numbered spaces from 1 to 50 and end with a "Finish" space. Use the ruler to make straight lines and the colored markers or pencils to make the board look beautiful!

Create the challenges: Each team must create 20 math challenges for the game. Half of the challenges should involve addition and the other half subtraction. Remember, the numbers must be less than 1,000. Write down the questions and answers on separate pieces of paper.

Decorate the game board: Now it's time to make the game board even more fun! Use the old magazines to cut out pictures of treasures and glue them to some of the spaces on the board. Each treasure is worth 10 points!

Prepare the game: Gather the dice, questions and answers, and treasures. Shuffle the questions and answers, and place them in a pile, face down. Each team should have pencils and paper to keep score.

How to play:
a. Each player chooses an adventurer to represent them in the game. The adventurer starts on space 1.
b. The first player rolls the dice. The number on the dice indicates how many spaces the adventurer should move forward.
c. The player picks a question from the pile and reads it out loud. All players should think about the answer, and the player who picked the question should give the correct answer. If the player answers correctly, they earn 5 points. If they answer incorrectly, they do not earn any points.
d. The adventurer moves forward the number of spaces indicated by the dice. If they land on a space with a treasure, they earn 10 points!
e. The next player takes a turn until all players have reached the "Finish" space.
f. When all players have reached the "Finish" space, the team with the most points wins!

Present your game: Each team should present their game to the class, explaining the rules, showing off the board, and the questions. You can even play a round with the class to show how the game works!
