Movement of Objects and People

Contextualization

Hello, little mathematicians! Today, we are going to embark on a very interesting and practical mathematical adventure. Have you ever stopped to think about how objects and people move? What makes a car go forward and a balloon rise in the sky? This has to do with a very important idea that we are going to learn in this project: Displacement.

Displacement is the distance and direction between two points in a straight line. It's like the path that an object or a person takes to go from one place to another. But, to understand it better, let's think about an example. Imagine you are at home and want to go to school. The path you take from your home to school is your displacement.

Introduction

Now that you have understood what displacement is, let's learn another very important idea: Reference System. Have you heard that the Earth is round and that we have the cardinal points, such as north, south, east, and west? These cardinal points are an example of a reference system. They help us understand in which direction we are moving.

In our daily lives, we use the reference system all the time, even without realizing it. For example, when we say that the school is 2 blocks north of our house, we are using the reference system to indicate the direction of displacement.

Now, just imagine: if you can understand and apply these ideas, you will be able to describe the displacement of objects and people in real situations. That is very useful, isn't it?

So, get ready for a lot of fun and learning, because our project will be practical and quite challenging! Let's go, little mathematicians!

Practical Activity: "The Journey of the Lost Treasure"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, little mathematicians, to apply the concepts of displacement and reference system in a fun and practical way. You will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students and together you will plan and carry out a journey to find a "lost treasure" on the map of our school.

Project Description

In this project, each group will receive a map of the school and the task of planning a route to find the "lost treasure". You will need to use concepts of displacement (distance and direction between two points) and reference system (cardinal points) to accomplish this task. Additionally, you will work on important socio-emotional skills, such as communication, teamwork, and time management.

Necessary Materials

  • Map of the school (can be printed or hand-drawn)
  • Scissors and glue
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Ruler
  • Paper and pen for notes

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive a map of the school.

  2. Defining the Treasure: Each group will choose a place on the map to be the location of the "lost treasure".

  3. Planning the Route: Now, with the "treasure" defined, the group must plan the route to reach it. Remember to think about the distance and direction between the points.

  4. Displacement and Reference System: During the planning, students should discuss and apply the concepts of displacement (the distance they will travel) and reference system (the cardinal points).

  5. Documenting the Route: Each group must document the route they planned on the map, using pencils and noting the directions. You can also draw or write some tips to help find the "treasure".

  6. Presenting the Journey: When all groups finish planning and documenting, each one will present their journey to the class. You will explain the path you planned, the directions you will follow, and the strategies you used.

You will have one week to complete this activity. In the end, each group must submit the map with the planned route and the notes taken. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun while learning!
