Coins and bills have different values, which are determined by the government of each country. In Brazil, for example, we have the 1 Real coin, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent. And we also have the 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 Real bills. All these coins and bills have different values, but we can exchange them for others of the same value, in other words, equivalent coins and bills.
Introduction
Now that we know a little about coins and bills, let's better understand the value equivalence. This means that we can exchange a coin or bill for others that have the same value. For example, we can exchange a 50 cents coin for 5 coins of 10 cents, because 50 cents is equal to 10 cents times 5.
But how can we know if an exchange is really equivalent? For that, we need to understand the absolute values and the relative values of coins and bills. The absolute value is the value that the coin or bill has by itself. For example, the 1 Real coin has an absolute value of 1 Real. The relative value is the value that the coin or bill has in relation to others. For example, the 50 cents coin has a relative value of 5 times the value of the 10 cents coin, because 50 cents is equal to 10 cents times 5.

Project Objective
The objective of this project is for students to understand the equivalence of values of coins and bills, as well as to practice math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of monetary values.
Project Description
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will create a mini shop using fictional coins and bills. Each group will be tasked with calculating the value of the products that will be for sale in the shop and making money exchanges.
Necessary Materials
- Paper or cardboard to make the fictional money
- Colored markers to draw the coins and bills
- Scissors (always under adult supervision)
- Glue
- Products for sale: drawings of snacks, toys, school supplies, etc.
- Notebook to record transactions
Step by Step

Preparing the Fictional Money: Each group should draw the coins and bills on paper or cardboard and cut them out. The coins should be 1 Real, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent. The bills should be 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 Reais.

Setting up the Shop: Students should choose the products they will sell in their shop. They can draw or cut out images of snacks, toys, school supplies, etc. Each product should have a price.
