Value Equivalence: Coins and Bills

Contextualization

Introduction

Hello, little mathematicians! Have you ever stopped to think about what money is and how it works? Money is something we use every day to buy things, and it is very important to understand its value and how we can use it efficiently. In our daily lives, we use coins and bills to make payments and receive change.

The coins and bills we use have different values. For example, a R$1.00 coin has the same value as a R$1.00 bill, but have you ever wondered how many R$0.10 coins are needed to have the same value as a R$1.00 coin? This is a concept called equivalence of values, and that's what we are going to learn more about!

Importance

Knowing about the equivalence of values is very important for our daily lives. It is through it that we can understand how our money works and how we can make change calculations, for example. In addition, the equivalence of values helps us to better understand mathematics and how it can be applied in real situations.

Isn't it amazing how mathematics is present in such simple things like coins and bills? So, let's embark together on this fun project and discover more about the equivalence of values: coins and bills. Let's go, little mathematicians!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Purchase of Dreams"

Project Objective

In this project, we will simulate a buying and selling situation, where students will learn and practice the equivalence of values between coins and bills. The goal is for students to develop mental calculation skills, problem-solving, and teamwork, while having fun and learning.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will receive a shopping list with items and their respective prices. The group's task will be to calculate the total value of the items on the list and find the best way to pay using the available coins and bills.

Necessary Materials

  1. Shopping list (provided by the teacher)
  2. Toy or printed coins and bills (R$1.00, R$0.50, R$0.25, R$0.10, R$0.05, R$0.01)

Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation: The teacher will form student groups. Each group must choose a leader to organize the activity.

  2. Activity Explanation: The teacher will explain the activity to the whole group. Students must pay attention to understand the rules of the game.

  3. Receipt of the Shopping List: Each group will receive a shopping list with five items and their respective prices. Students do not need to worry about the value of real money, they should only consider toy or printed coins and bills.

  4. Calculation of Total Value: Students must calculate the total value of the items on the list. They can use a calculator, but the teacher will encourage the use of mental calculation to develop this skill.

  5. Choice of Coins and Bills: After calculating the total value, the group must choose the best way to pay, using the available coins and bills. They can use coins and bills of different values to pay for each item.

  6. Presentation of the Solution: Each group will present to the class how they paid for the items on the list. The teacher will evaluate the presentation, the way the calculations were made, and the students' understanding of the equivalence of values.

  7. Final Discussion: After all presentations, the teacher will lead a final discussion with the class, reinforcing the concepts of equivalence of values. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and clarify doubts.

Delivery Format

The delivery format will be a live presentation to the class, where each group will present how they paid for the items on the list. In addition, students will submit the calculation of the total value and how they paid, written on paper.

Remember, the activity is meant to be fun and challenging! So, work together, help each other, and enjoy the learning process. Good luck, little mathematicians!
