Hello, young scientists! As we delve into the incredible world of science, we will focus on our friends, the plants. Have you ever wondered how plants feed themselves? How do water and light play fundamental roles in this process? In our project, we will explore these intriguing questions and much more, taking us on a journey of discovery and learning.

The importance of this topic is immense! Did you know that without plants, life as we know it would not exist? Plants produce the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, and provide habitat for many animals. They also help regulate the Earth's climate! But to do all this, plants need two very important elements: water and light.

Introduction

We have not yet discovered all the answers about how plants use water and light, but we understand some things. The first thing we must understand is that plants perform a process called photosynthesis. This is a big name, isn't it? Basically, photosynthesis is the process by which plants transform water and carbon dioxide, under sunlight, into their food.

Water plays a crucial role in this process. Plants draw it from the soil through their roots and transport it to all their parts through what we call conducting vessels. Light is equally essential. It is the sunlight that provides the energy needed for photosynthesis.

But plants don't just need light, they need the right light. Have you noticed that plant leaves are green? This happens because chlorophyll, a pigment found in leaves, reflects green light. Sunlight is composed of various colors, but chlorophyll mainly absorbs the blue and red colors, which are necessary for photosynthesis.

Practical Activity: "Our Experimental Gardens: The Adventure of Plants with Water and Light"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to observe firsthand the vital role that water and light play in the growth of plants. Additionally, the project will seek to develop social skills, such as teamwork, and emotional skills, such as time management and problem-solving.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for creating an experimental garden. They will sow seeds in different light and water conditions, making predictions about what will happen in each scenario and recording their observations in a logbook.

Required Materials

  1. Bean seeds (or another fast-growing plant)
  2. Planting pots (small plastic or cardboard pots)
  3. Planting soil
  4. Water
  5. Location with direct sunlight
  6. Location without direct sunlight (shaded areas)
  7. Logbook for each group (can be a small notebook)

Step by Step

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Each group will receive a set of materials.
  2. Students will put soil in the planting pots and plant the bean seeds.
  3. They will divide the pots into three groups: one group will be watered daily (control), the second will be watered only twice a week (little water), and the last group will not receive water (no water).

Step 2: Sunlight

  1. Half of the pots in each group will be placed under direct sunlight and the other half will be placed in shaded areas.
  2. Now, we have six experimental conditions: control with direct light, control with shade, little water with direct light, little water with shade, no water with direct light, and no water with shade.

Step 3: Records and Observations

  1. Every day, students will check their experimental gardens and record the growth, color, and general changes in the plants in their logbooks.
  2. They will also record the amount of sunlight each plant receives and the amount of water given to each of the groups.

Step 4: Conclusions

  1. After a few weeks, students will compare the results and draw conclusions about the role of water and light in plant growth.
  2. Each group will present their findings to the class, highlighting the conditions that resulted in the best plant growth.

Delivery Format

Each group will prepare a simple presentation, with illustrations, graphics, or even the logbook, describing their observations and conclusions. They will be free to be creative and use different ways to express their understandings (they can draw, create stories, songs, etc.). What matters is sharing what they have learned about the role of water and light in plant growth. Remember: teamwork, creativity, and communication are as important as scientific results!
