Flat Figures: Sides and Vertices

Contextualization

Hello, 3rd Grade kids! Let's embark on a fun journey through the world of Plane Figures. But what are they? Well, plane figures are drawings that only exist on a plane, like a sheet of paper. Simple, isn't it? But they can be much more interesting than they seem!

Within plane figures, we have two super important concepts: sides and vertices. Sides are the lines that form the edges of the figures, and vertices are the points where these lines meet. They are like the corners of a box or the intersection of two streets.

Now, have you ever stopped to think how many sides a square has or how many vertices a triangle has? These are questions we will explore in this project!

Introduction

Plane Figures

Plane figures can be divided into some categories, such as quadrilaterals (which have four sides), triangles (three sides), and circles (which have no sides, but are formed by a continuous curve).

Sides

The sides of a figure are the lines that compose it. In the case of a triangle, we have three sides. In a rectangle, we have four sides.

Vertices

Vertices are the points where the sides of a figure meet. In a square, for example, we have four vertices.

Now, how can we count these sides and vertices? Do all squares have the same number of sides and vertices? That's what we are going to find out with our project!

Remember, mathematics is all around us. It helps us understand how things work and gives us tools to solve problems. So, let's go on this mathematical adventure together!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Building and Exploring Plane Figures

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, in groups, to build different plane figures, such as quadrilaterals and triangles. Additionally, you will explore and discover how many sides and vertices each figure has.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will build plane figures using simple materials, such as toothpicks and modeling clay. You will draw your figures on paper, count how many sides and vertices each one has, and then present to the class.

Required Materials

  • Toothpicks
  • Modeling clay
  • Sheets of paper
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Ruler (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: The teacher will form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Exploring Plane Figures: The teacher will introduce the concept of plane figures, sides, and vertices. Then, each group will receive a sheet of paper and toothpicks. You will draw a square on the paper, using the toothpicks as sides.

  3. Counting Sides and Vertices: After drawing the square, the group must count how many sides and how many vertices it has. Record this information on the paper.

  4. Exploring More Figures: Now, it's time to explore other types of plane figures. Use the modeling clay to create triangles and quadrilaterals. Draw these figures on paper and count how many sides and vertices they have.

  5. Presentation to the Class: Each group will present their figures to the class, showing the drawings, counting how many sides and vertices each one has, and explaining how they counted.

  6. Final Record: At the end of the presentation, each group must hand over to the teacher the drawings made on paper with notes on how many sides and vertices each figure has.

Delivery Format

The delivery will be done by the group in the form of an oral presentation to the class, in which the group will explain what they discovered by building the figures and count how many sides and vertices each one has. Additionally, they must hand over to the teacher the drawings made on paper with notes on sides and vertices.

Remember, it's a group activity, so everyone should participate and help each other to carry out the project. Have fun exploring the world of plane figures!
