Equality: Identical Sums and Subtractions

Contextualization

Hello, little geniuses! In this project, we will embark on an exciting mathematical adventure about equality. But what does equality mean? Well, equality is a relationship between two values or mathematical expressions that state they are equal.

In the world of mathematics, it is essential to understand equality to solve problems and equations. And to master this concept, we need to explore two important topics: identical sums and subtractions.

Introduction

Identical sums are basically sums that have the same result. For example, 3+2 and 4+1 are identical sums, as both results are 5. On the other hand, identical subtractions are subtractions that have the same result. For example, 7-3 and 6-2 are identical subtractions, as both results are 4.

Now, you might be wondering: 'Why do we need to learn about identical sums and subtractions?' And the answer is quite simple, because they help us understand equality in a more practical and fun way!

When we solve mathematical equations, we are looking for equality. Identical sums and subtractions are valuable tools for this. They show us that even though the expressions are different, the final result can be the same.

And when we learn to identify and use identical sums and subtractions, we become more skilled at solving problems, both in mathematics and in real life. You will notice that mathematics is present in many situations in our daily lives.

So, are you ready for this mathematical adventure? Let's go!

Practical Activity: 'Discovering the Twin Sisters'

Project Objective

In this activity, students will explore the concept of equality through identical sums and subtractions. They will have the opportunity to work in teams, apply problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and communication.

Project Description

Students will create a game called 'Discovering the Twin Sisters' that will involve identical sums and subtractions. The game rules will be defined by the students themselves, based on the concept of equality.

Required Materials

  • Cardboards
  • Colorful pens
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Sheets of paper
  • Pencils and erasers

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Concept Discussion: In each group, discuss the concept of equality and identical sums/subtractions. Remember practical examples you already know.

  3. Board Creation: On a cardboard, students should draw a game board. It can be a path with squares or any shape they prefer, as long as it is possible to move through it.

  4. Choosing the Twin Sisters: On a separate paper, write different numbers (from 1 to 10) in pairs. For example, on one paper, write '2' and '2', and on another paper, write '3' and '3'. These will be the cards representing the 'twin sisters' in the game.

  5. Creating Game Cards: On sheets of paper, students should create game cards. Each card must have a sum or subtraction, and the result of the operation must be one of the numbers chosen in step 4. For example, a card could have the operation '2+1' and the result '3'.

  6. Rule Definition: In each group, students should discuss and define the game rules. How will the cards be used? How will players advance on the board? Who wins the game?

  7. Game Assembly: After defining the rules, students should assemble the game. The cards should be spread with the operation facing down, so players do not see what is written.

  8. Team Game: The groups should play the game they created. During the game, students should explain the rules to each other, make sums and subtractions, and look for equalities.

  9. Final Reflection: After playing, students should gather and discuss what they learned about equality, identical sums, and subtractions. What were the most challenging parts of the game? What were the most fun parts?

Remember, the main goal is to learn in a fun way and work as a team! So, have a lot of fun and happy studies!
