Hello, little scientists! Are you ready for an amazing journey through the world of capacity and mass measurements? You must already be familiar with some of these units, such as liter, milliliter, kilogram, and gram. But do you know how these measurements are used in our daily lives?

Measurement units are tools that help us quantify the world around us. They are essential for many aspects of our daily life, from cooking to shopping at the supermarket. Just imagine how difficult it would be to buy a package of cookies without knowing the weight, or to cook a recipe without knowing the right amount of an ingredient!

Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. Mass, on the other hand, is the amount of matter an object has. To measure capacity, we use liter (L) and milliliter (mL). To measure mass, we use kilogram (kg) and gram (g).

Importance

Knowing the units of capacity and mass measurement is not only important for cooking or shopping. They are also used in many other areas, such as science, engineering, and even sports! Let's give some examples:

  • In science, capacity and mass are used to measure the amount of substances in a chemical reaction, or the amount of energy in an object.
  • In engineering, capacity and mass are used to design structures, such as bridges and buildings, to ensure they can support the appropriate weight.
  • In sports, capacity and mass are used to measure athletes' performance, such as the weight a weightlifter can lift, or the amount of water a swimmer can ingest to hydrate.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Measures!"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore and better understand the units of capacity (liter and milliliter) and mass (kilogram and gram) measurements, and how they are applied in the real world. Additionally, the project aims to develop skills such as teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and communication.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, each group of students will be challenged to create a "Miniature Supermarket" inside the classroom, where they will research, collect, categorize, and sell products using the units of capacity and mass measurement.

Students will plan and execute all stages of the project, from creating the supermarket, purchasing and categorizing products, to selling to "customers" (other groups of students). Each group will set their own prices for the products, and the "customers" will have to calculate the total amount of liters and grams of each product they are buying.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard paper and colored pens to create product packaging
  • Kitchen products (can be simulated with cardboard, for example) to be sold (examples: rice, beans, salt, sugar, milk, juice, water)
  • Kitchen scale
  • Measuring cups (liter, half liter, etc.) and measuring spoons (gram, half gram, etc.)
  • Sheets of paper and pencils to record purchases and calculations

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Supermarket Planning: Each group will plan how their "Miniature Supermarket" will be. They must decide which products they will sell, create product packaging, and set prices.

  3. Price Research: Groups will research the prices of the products they have chosen and write them down on a sheet of paper.

  4. Product Purchase: Using the fictional money provided, groups will purchase products for the supermarket.

  5. Product Classification: Groups will classify the products by type and unit of measurement. For example, all products measured in liters will be grouped together, as well as products measured in grams.

  6. Price Creation: Each group will create the prices of the products, taking into account the amount of liters or grams each product has.

  7. Product Sale: Students will simulate a supermarket, where each group will be the seller and the other groups will be the customers. Customers will have to calculate the total value of the purchase, considering the amount of liters and grams of each product.

  8. Purchase Record: Each group of customers must write down the purchases on a sheet of paper, including the amount of liters and grams of each product.

  9. Presentation of Results: At the end of the activity, each group will present to the class the results of their research and the discoveries they made about the units of capacity and mass measurement.
