Flat Figures: Sides and Vertices

Contextualization

Hello, little mathematicians! Today we are going on an incredible journey through the world of flat shapes, and discovering all their secrets. Did you know that flat shapes are everywhere around us? Yes, from the chocolates you eat to the toys you play with, all of them have geometric shapes that can be drawn on a piece of paper.

Flat shapes are essential elements of mathematics and also of many other areas, such as art, architecture, and even nature. They are like puzzle pieces, each with its own place and purpose. And to better understand these pieces, it is important to know some key concepts, such as sides and vertices.

Introduction

Sides are the lines that form the edges of a flat shape. For example, the rectangle has four sides, while the triangle has three. Vertices, on the other hand, are the points where two sides meet. In the case of the rectangle, it has four vertices, and the triangle has three.

But why is it so important to know the sides and vertices of flat shapes? Well, these concepts are like keys that open the door to understanding various other mathematical topics. For example, when learning about polygons, which are flat shapes with straight and closed sides, you will need to know how to count the sides and vertices to identify them correctly.

And that's not all, little mathematicians. Sides and vertices are also related to other important concepts, such as the sum of the interior angles of a polygon and the classification of flat shapes into groups, such as quadrilaterals and pentagons. So, are you ready to become true experts in sides and vertices? Let's go!

Practical Activity: "Exploring Sides and Vertices in the Real World"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore and identify flat shapes in the real world, counting their sides and vertices, and later sharing their discoveries with the class.

Description and Materials Needed

Each group of students will be responsible for selecting three different objects in their home or school that have geometric shapes. They should observe each object, identify its component flat shapes, count their sides and vertices, and record everything in a "Flat Shape Exploration Diary".

The materials needed for this activity are:

  1. Objects with various geometric shapes (they can be toys, boxes, packages, etc.);
  2. Pencils and paper for notes;
  3. A camera or cell phone to take pictures of the objects (optional, but can be useful for documenting the discoveries).

Step by Step

  1. Object Selection: The group should choose three different objects that have geometric shapes. It can be a toy, a box, an apple - use your creativity!

  2. Observation and Identification: Carefully observe each object. Identify which flat shapes make up each object. Remember, a box can have six sides and eight vertices, for example.

  3. Counting Sides and Vertices: Now, count how many sides and vertices each flat shape has in each object. Write down your findings in the "Flat Shape Exploration Diary".

  4. Drawing Record: Draw each object and all its flat shapes in the diary. Next to each drawing, write down how many sides and vertices each flat shape has.

  5. Presentation to the Class: Each group should present their objects and share their discoveries with the class. This is the moment to show the drawings and tell what you have learned about sides and vertices.

Remember, little mathematicians, the important thing is to explore, have fun, and learn together!

Delivery Format

The "Flat Shape Exploration Diary" must be delivered to the teacher at the end of the project. In addition, students can also present their discoveries to the class, using the objects and drawings as support.

Are you ready for the adventure? So, let's get to work and happy exploration!
