Geometric figures are present everywhere around us, from gift packaging to the toys we love. They are formed by lines, points, and angles, and help us better understand the space we live in. Spatial geometric figures, as the name suggests, have an extra dimension: depth. They have not only length and width, like flat figures, but also height.

You must be wondering: "What is the use of knowing about spatial geometric figures?" Well, the truth is that this is a very important skill. When we understand the characteristics and properties of these figures, we are able to interpret maps, house plans, sketches, and even better understand how some toys work!

Furthermore, understanding the planifications of spatial figures helps us visualize these shapes better on a plane, like a sheet of paper. This is very useful when we need to make representations of three-dimensional objects in two dimensions, such as when drawing a map or a diagram.

Introduction

In this project, we will delve into five spatial geometric figures: the cube, the pyramid, the parallelepiped, the sphere, and the cylinder. These are some of the most common figures we encounter in our daily lives.

The cube, for example, is the shape of dice. The pyramid is the most common shape for party hats. The parallelepiped is the shape of a brick. The sphere resembles a soccer ball or an orange. And the cylinder is the shape of a soda can.

Now, the best part! We will learn not only to recognize these figures but also to draw them on a sheet of paper! Let's find out how each of them can be "disassembled" into parts that we can accommodate on the flat surface of the paper. That's planification!

Practical Activity: Exploring Spatial Geometric Figures and their Planifications

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for groups of students to explore and understand the characteristics of spatial geometric figures (cube, pyramid, parallelepiped, sphere, and cylinder) and their planifications. Additionally, the project aims to develop socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork and time management.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for choosing one of the five figures and creating a presentation about it. In the presentation, the group must explain the characteristics of the three-dimensional figure, such as the number of faces, vertices, and edges, and show the planification of the figure, that is, how it can be drawn on a flat surface.

Necessary Materials

  • Letter-size paper
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • Scissors and glue
  • Computer or tablet with internet access (for research, if available)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: The class will be divided into 5 groups, each responsible for one of the figures: cube, pyramid, parallelepiped, sphere, and cylinder. Each group should have between 3 and 5 students.

  2. Research and Study: Each group should research the assigned figure. Try to understand the characteristics of the figure, such as the number of faces, vertices, and edges, and how it can be "disassembled" into a planification.

  3. Creating the Presentation: With the collected information, each group should create a presentation for the class. The presentation should include drawings of the figure, explanation of its characteristics, and the demonstration of its planification. You can use letter-size paper, colored pencils, markers, or crayons to create the drawings.

  4. Presentation Rehearsal: Once ready, the group should rehearse the presentation. Each member should participate and know what to say.

  5. Presentation to the Class: Finally, each group will present to the class. Remember to be clear and concise in your explanations.

  6. Exhibition of Figures: After the presentations, the groups should display their drawings of the figures and their planifications in the classroom, so everyone can observe and learn more.

Delivery Format

The project will be delivered in two ways: through an oral presentation to the class and the exhibition of drawings and planifications in the classroom.
