Think about how important it is for us to hear the birds chirping, the music of an instrument or simply the voice of a friend. It is impressive to realize how sound is present in all aspects of our lives.
Introduction
Sound is a wave, but not just any wave. It is a mechanical wave, which means that it needs a material medium to propagate, such as air, water or a piece of wood. When we clap our hands, for example, we create a disturbance in the air, which is transmitted from particle to particle until it reaches our ears. This is one of the key concepts that we will learn together.
Just as sea waves have different heights, sound also has its "heights", which we call frequency. A high-frequency sound is sharp and a low-frequency sound is deep. Have you ever noticed that a cat's meow is sharper than a lion's roar? This happens because the frequency of the cat's meow is higher than that of the lion's roar.
In addition, sound also has intensity, which is how strong or weak it is. A loud sound is called strong and a low sound is called weak. Did you know that a normal conversation has an intensity of about 60 decibels and that a rock band can reach over 100 decibels?

Project Objective
This activity will allow students to explore:

At the end, the students will create an illustrated report to share their discoveries and learnings.
Detailed Description of the Project
The students will do a series of experiments with different homemade musical instruments and observe how sound is produced and how it travels through the air and other materials. They will also experiment with sounds of different frequencies and intensities.
This project is interdisciplinary, as it involves concepts from science (the physical phenomenon of sound) and music (frequency and intensity), besides stimulating socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, problem solving and creative thinking.

Detailed Step by Step to Perform the Activity
1. Cup Phone
Let's start by creating a cup phone to understand how sound travels.
Step 1: Make a small hole in the bottom of two cups. Step 2: Pass one end of the yarn through one of the cups and tie a big knot on the outside so that the yarn doesn't come out. Step 3: Repeat the process with the other cup. Step 4: One student speaks into one cup and the other listens using the other cup. What happens?
2. Sound Balloon
Now let's see how different materials affect sound.
Step 1: Inflate a balloon and hold it close to your ear. Step 2: Ask a friend to clap their hands near the balloon. What did you feel?
3. Dancing Rice
Let's observe how sound makes things move.
Step 1: Inflate a balloon and put some rice on top of it. Step 2: Talk or sing near the balloon. What happens to the rice?
4. Grave and Sharp Sound
Let's discover the difference between a grave and a sharp sound.
Step 1: Make two cardboard tubes, one longer than the other. Step 2: Tap on each tube and observe the sound produced. Which one is graver and which one is sharper?
After completing all the activities, the students must work in groups to prepare an illustrated report about the experiments, describing what they learned about the production, propagation and perception of sound. Each group should present its report to the rest of the class.
