Mathematics is a discipline that permeates all aspects of our lives. Whether at the supermarket shelves, in building a house, or in planning a trip, we use mathematics consciously and unconsciously. Within the mathematical universe, a fundamental concept is that of equality. It serves as the basis for problem-solving and for structuring many other concepts. In this project, we will explore the concept of equality in a playful way and with a lot of collaboration.

In mathematics, equality is a statement that two terms or expressions have the same value. It is represented by the symbol "=". For example, in the equation 2 + 3 = 5, both sides of the equality are identical. Understanding this relationship is fundamental for the development of mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.

One way to work with equalities is through filling in the gaps. For example, in an equation like 3 + ___ = 8 - 2, the student needs to find the missing value to make the statement true. This activity helps develop logical thinking and understanding of how mathematics works.

Equality is not only a mathematical concept but also an idea deeply rooted in our society. When we talk about equality, we refer to everyone's right to have the same opportunities, regardless of color, gender, religion, or social class. Just as in mathematics, where both sides of an equality have the same value, in society, each individual has the same value before the law and should be treated with equity. Therefore, exploring the concept of equality in mathematics is also an opportunity to discuss the importance of equality in our society.

In this project, we will use mathematics as a vehicle to explore the theme of equality in a fun and collaborative way. We will work in groups to solve challenges together and build our understanding of this key concept.

Practical Activity: Building Equality with Building Blocks

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to work in teams of 3 to 5 participants to explore the concept of equality through a practical exercise using building blocks.

Detailed Project Description

Each team will receive a quantity of building blocks of different colors and sizes. They will use these blocks to solve challenges involving equalities. The activity will be divided into three parts:

1. Getting to Know the Blocks
2. Solving Equality Challenges
3. Creating Your Own Equality Challenges

The first two parts of the project will be completed during class time, while the last part will be a homework project that each team will do together.

Required Materials

• Building blocks of different sizes and colors
• Pen and paper for notes
• Camera or cellphone to take photos of the work done

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Getting to Know the Blocks:

   • Each team will receive a quantity of blocks of different sizes and colors.
   • They will spend some time exploring the blocks and learning about their characteristics.
   • Each team should make a list of all the unique characteristics that can be used to distinguish the blocks (e.g., color, size, shape).

2. Solving Equality Challenges:

   • The teacher will present equality challenges for the teams to solve. For example, "build two different block structures that have the same number of blue blocks" or "build two different block structures that have the same total number of blocks".
   • The teams will work together to solve the challenges presented, documenting their solutions by taking photos and explaining their solutions in writing.

3. Creating Your Own Equality Challenges:

   • At home, each team will create 5 unique equality challenges to solve. They should document each challenge in writing and take photos of their solutions.
   • Each challenge should be presented in a problem format, like the examples given in the Solving Equality Challenges step of the project.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each team must deliver:

1. A detailed written report on their experiences, including:

   • Introduction: Why equality is important in mathematics and society.
   • Development: Explanation of the challenges, methodology used, and results obtained. Include photos of the challenges solved.
   • Conclusion: Key learnings and the relevance of the concept of equality in mathematics and in life.
   • Bibliography: List the resources used for study.

2. An oral presentation to the class about their experiences with the project.

This project is expected to take around 5 to 10 hours per participating student to complete, and the deadline is one month.
