Hello, young scientists! Are you ready for an amazing journey into the world of microorganisms? In this project, we will explore the wonderful ability that these tiny beings have to produce food. But first, let's better understand what microorganisms are and how they play an important role in our lives.

Microorganisms are living beings so small that they can only be seen through a microscope. They are everywhere: in the water we drink, in the air we breathe, even in our bodies! Some microorganisms are harmful, like bacteria that cause diseases, but many of them are beneficial and play essential roles in our ecosystem.

Introduction

Have you ever heard of fermentation? This is a process carried out by microorganisms, which convert substances like sugars into alcohol, acids, or gases. Through fermentation, we humans can produce a variety of delicious foods, such as bread, wine, yogurt, and cheese! And guess what: all thanks to microorganisms!

Scientists are also exploring ways to use microorganisms in food production more sustainably. They have discovered that certain types of microorganisms can produce proteins, vitamins, and other nutrients that are essential for our diet. This could be a solution to the challenge of how to feed a growing world population without causing harm to the environment.

Now, you must be wondering: how do microorganisms produce these foods? Well, that's an interesting question and that's exactly what we'll be exploring in this project! Together, we will learn about different types of microorganisms, their growth requirements, and how they play a crucial role in the production of foods we love.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Our Yogurt Factory"

Project Objective:

This project aims to understand the fermentation process carried out by microorganisms, more specifically, the production of yogurt, and how we can control and monitor this process. Additionally, the project aims to develop skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, each group will create a miniature "yogurt factory", where they can observe the fermentation process done by bacteria that transform milk into yogurt. Each group will be responsible for taking care of their own "batch" of yogurt and documenting the entire process.

Required Materials:

  • 1 liter of milk
  • 1 cup of plain yogurt
  • 1 kitchen thermometer (or any object that can measure temperature)
  • 1 large container to mix milk and yogurt
  • 4 glass jars with lids (for making yogurt)
  • 1 styrofoam box or cooler
  • 4 clean dish towels
  • Pen and paper for notes

Project Step-by-Step:

  1. Setting up the environment: Clean all materials that will be used.

  2. Heating the milk: Heat the milk in a pan until it reaches a temperature of 40-45°C. Use the thermometer to check the milk temperature.

  3. Adding the yogurt: When the milk is at the correct temperature, add the cup of plain yogurt to the milk and mix well.

  4. Distributing the mixture: Pour the milk and yogurt mixture into the glass jars and cover them.

  5. Thermal insulation: Wrap the yogurt jars with the dish towels and place them inside the styrofoam box or cooler. This will help maintain a constant temperature, which is important for the fermentation process.

  6. Monitoring: Keep the styrofoam box or cooler closed and do not disturb the jars for at least 6 hours. During this period, the yogurt will be fermenting. Note the time when you put the jars to ferment.

  7. Verification: After 6 hours, check the yogurt. It should be thicker and have a sour taste. If so, the yogurt is ready! Otherwise, let it ferment for a few more hours.

  8. Recording the results: Record all steps taken, observations made, and results obtained. Share your notes in the classroom.

Remember: throughout the process, it is important to wash hands and materials used thoroughly to avoid contamination by other microorganisms.

Delivery Format:

Each group must submit a written report, which can be illustrated or even in comic book format. The report should contain a detailed description of how each step of the process was carried out, the observations made during the fermentation time, and the results obtained. Additionally, they should include a conclusion about what they learned from the activity and how it was to work as a team.
