Phoneme-Grapheme: Direct and Contextual Regulars

Setting the Scene

Hello team! Are you ready to set sail on an adventure through the world of sounds and letters? Our destination is the fascinating universe of the Portuguese Language! Our journey has a very important goal: to understand how words are formed by sounds (phonemes) and letters (graphemes). Let's get a better sense of what that means?

When we speak, we produce sounds that are called phonemes. However, the letters that we use to write are graphemes. Each language has its own combination of phonemes and graphemes, which means that the sounds we produce while speaking and the letters we use when writing can vary from language to language.

Introduction

Now, we're going to enter the world of Phoneme-Graphemes. This is the relationship between the sounds that we pronounce and the letters that we write. In our language, Portuguese, we have a wide variety of phonemes and graphemes, which makes writing and speaking a thrilling challenge!

Our first stop is to understand Regular Direct Phoneme-Graphemes. These are ones in which a sound (phoneme) corresponds to a letter (grapheme) in a direct and unchanging way. For example, the letter "a" always corresponds to the sound /a/ as in "amor" and "casa". Seems simple, doesn't it? But our language has many exceptions and we're going to explore those as well!

The second part of our journey is getting to know Regular Contextual Phoneme-Graphemes. These phonemes vary according to the position of the letter in the word. For example, the letter "s" can represent the sound /s/ as in "sol" or the sound /z/ as in "caso". It seems complicated, but with practice and observation, we're going to learn how to identify these variations.

Along the way, we're going to discover that reading and writing are much more than simply putting letters and sounds together. They are processes that involve a lot of perception, practice, and knowledge. So, buckle up, get your minds ready for a great adventure, and together we're going to unravel the mysteries of the Phoneme-Grapheme: Regular Direct and Contextual!

Hands-on Activity: Exploring Phonemes-Graphemes

Activity Title: "Making My Phoneme-Grapheme Dictionary"

Project Objective

To learn how to identify and classify regular direct and contextual phonemes-graphemes by creating a dictionary of words.

Project Description

Groups of students will create a dictionary containing words that illustrate regular direct and contextual phonemes-graphemes. Each group will be responsible for one part of the dictionary, which will be divided into sections according to the phoneme.

Materials Needed

  • Cardstock or poster board (for the dictionary pages)
  • Sheets of paper (for writing the words)
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons (for coloring and illustrating)
  • Dictionaries (for reference when needed)

Step by Step

  1. Forming the Groups: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and explain the project in detail.

  2. Dividing the Dictionary: Explain that each group will be responsible for one section of the dictionary, which will be divided according to the phonemes. For example, one group could be responsible for the "a" section, which would include words such as "amor" and "casa".

  3. Researching and Selecting Words: Each group should research and select 5 to 10 words that contain the phoneme for its section. The groups can use books, magazines, and the internet to find the words.

  4. Recording the Words: The selected words should be written on sheets of paper, one word per sheet. Remind students to write both the phoneme (sound) and the grapheme (letter) of the word.

  5. Illustrating the Words: Each sheet with the word should be illustrated to help with the association between the sound and the letter. For example, for the word "amor," the student could draw a heart.

  6. Assembling the Dictionary: The sheets with the words and illustrations should be glued to the cardstock or poster board, forming the pages of the dictionary. Remind the students to organize the pages in alphabetical order.

  7. Presenting the Dictionary: Each group should present its dictionary to the class, explaining the words it selected and the phonemes that they represent.

Remember to monitor the group's work, answer questions, and encourage collaboration and creativity. Learning through play is much more fun!

Project Delivery

The project deliverable will be the presentation of the dictionary to the class. Each group will have 5 minutes to present its dictionary, explaining the words and the phonemes they represent. The dictionary will be evaluated according to organization, accuracy in representing the phonemes and graphemes, and the creativity of the illustrations.
