Spelling and Reading of the Initial H

Introduction

Hello, kids! Are you ready to embark on a word adventure? Today, we are going to talk about the letter 'H'! Did you know that this is one of the funniest and most mysterious letters in our alphabet? That's right! The 'H' is a consonant, but it doesn't make any sound on its own, it always needs another letter to make a sound. Do you want to find out more about it? Let's go!

The 'H' can be a challenge, but don't worry, together we will unravel all of its secrets. Let's start by learning how to write and read this letter. To write the 'H', we make two parallel vertical lines. Seems simple, right? But here comes the trick: when we read the 'H', we don't say anything! That's right, the 'H' is silent, it has no sound of its own.

Contextualization

So, why do we learn to write and read the 'H' if it has no sound? This happens because the 'H' is very important for our language. It helps to form some of our most common sounds, as in the case of the words 'hour' and 'man'. Do you see how important the 'H' is for these words to have the sound we know?

Moreover, the 'H' can completely change the meaning of some words! For example, we have the word 'há' which means 'to exist' and the word 'a' which is a preposition. With the 'H' at the beginning, the word 'há' becomes a question, isn't it amazing?

Now that we know a little more about the 'H', how about we embark together on this journey of discoveries? Our challenge will be to create a dictionary of words starting with the letter 'H'. Let's learn in a fun and practical way, applying everything we know about the 'H' and discovering even more about our fascinating world of words!

Practical Activity: 'The Dictionary of H'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to create a dictionary of words that start with the letter 'H', reinforcing the reading, writing, and understanding of words with this silent consonant.

Project Description

Each group of students should create a dictionary with at least 10 words that start with 'H'. The dictionary should contain the meaning of each word and a sample sentence using it. In addition, students should illustrate each word to make the dictionary even more fun and visual.

Necessary Materials

  • A4 paper sheets or notebook
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons
  • Dictionary (optional, for reference)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: The teacher will form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research and Word Selection: Each group should research words that start with the letter 'H'. The dictionary can be used to help with the research. Then, choose the 10 most interesting words for the dictionary.

  3. Definition and Sample Sentence: For each chosen word, write the meaning and a sentence using it. The sentence should be created by the students and should be clear so that it can be understood by anyone.

  4. Illustration: Draw an illustration for each word. The image should help understand the meaning of the word.

  5. Dictionary Assembly: Now, it's time to assemble the dictionary! Each word with its meaning, sample sentence, and illustration should occupy one page of the dictionary. You can organize the pages however you prefer, but remember to leave enough space for writing and drawing.

  6. Review and Delivery: Before submitting, review the dictionary to check if all words are spelled correctly and if the illustrations are well done.

  7. Presentation: Finally, each group should present their dictionary to the class, reading the words, meanings, sentences, and explaining the illustrations.

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun while learning! Good luck, kids!
