Music: Introduction

Contextualization

Music is a universal language that transcends borders, cultures, and peoples. It is a form of expression that reflects society, personalities, ideas, emotions, and the history of a people. Music has been a vital part of different societies throughout the centuries and continues to play an important role in our lives today.

In education, music plays a huge role in student development. It not only helps improve motor skills and coordination but also promotes creativity, enhances memory, concentration, and fosters emotional and social development. Teaching music in school allows students to express their emotions, experience the joy of creating, and share their musical creations.

Music is not isolated; it relates to other disciplines such as history, geography, mathematics, and other arts. For example, music can be used to better understand a historical period, learn about different cultures, or practice mathematics through the rhythm and duration of musical notes.

This project aims to explore music and its connections with other disciplines in a deep, playful, and engaging way. During the project development, you will dive into music theory, music history, musical analysis, musical creation, and performance. We are excited to embark on this musical journey with you.

Activity

Activity Title: Musical Dive

Objective:

Develop students' understanding of music through the study of different musical genres, their history, composition, and performance. In addition, students will learn to relate music to other disciplines such as History and Mathematics.

Detailed Description:

The main objective of this activity is to create a musical presentation using conventional musical instruments, improvised instruments, or body sounds, along with a detailed research on the chosen musical genre. The presentation should include an original composition based on the studied musical genre, an arrangement of an existing song, and a theoretical presentation about the chosen genre.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Paper and pen for notes.
  • Musical instruments or objects that can be used as instruments.
  • A space to rehearse and present the musical performance.
  • Camera or smartphone to record the performance.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Selection of musical genre and team formation: Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group should select a musical genre to explore.

  2. Research on the musical genre: Groups should research in-depth about the selected musical genre. They should understand the history, characteristics, main artists and songs, as well as the influence of this genre on society.

  3. Creation of an original composition: Each group should create an original music inspired by the musical genre they researched. They can use musical instruments, body sounds, or create their own instruments from everyday objects.

  4. Arrangement of an existing song: In addition to the original composition, groups should choose an existing song from the musical genre they chose and make a musical arrangement of it.

  5. Preparation of the theoretical presentation: Each group should prepare a presentation about the musical genre they researched. They should talk about the history, characteristics, main artists and songs, and the influence of this genre on society.

  6. Rehearsal and recording of the presentation: After preparation, groups should rehearse and record their musical presentation. This recording should include the original composition, the musical arrangement, and the theoretical presentation.

  7. Performance presentation and feedback: Groups will present their performances to the rest of the class and receive feedback from peers and the teacher.

Project Deliverables:

In addition to the musical presentation, each group must submit a written report detailing the project creation process. The report should include:

  • Introduction: In this section, the group should contextualize the chosen musical genre, mentioning its relevance and real-world application, as well as the justification for choosing the genre.

  • Development: Here, the group should explain the theory behind their chosen musical genre, the process of creating the original composition and musical arrangement, the methodology used for research, and the results obtained.

  • Conclusions: Students should conclude the report by summarizing the main points addressed, highlighting the learnings acquired, and drawing conclusions about the project. They can include how music relates to the other disciplines studied.

  • Bibliography: The group should list the sources used during the research.

This report should be submitted along with the recording of the musical presentation and will serve to evaluate not only the learned content but also the research, collaboration, artistic creation, and oral expression skills of the students.
