Contextualization

Hello, explorers of our beautiful planet Earth! We are about to embark on a great adventure through the fascinating world of the Environment and its characteristics. But before we go, do you know what the Environment is? It is everything that surrounds us, both living things (plants, animals, humans) and non-living things (air, water, soil, climate). We, humans, are part of this environment and we need to understand how it works so that we can live in harmony with nature.

How is Geography related to the Environment? Geography is the science that studies space, that is, everything that exists on our planet. And the Environment is an essential part of the geographical space, as it is through it that we can understand the interactions between nature and human society.

Introduction

The Environment is composed of several parts, and each of them has its own characteristics. For example, forests are areas covered by trees, full of life, and provide many resources for us, such as wood, food, and medicine. Deserts, on the other hand, are very dry regions, with little vegetation and water, but they also have a great diversity of plants and animals adapted to these extreme conditions.

Another important part of the Environment is the rivers and seas, which are sources of fresh and saltwater, respectively. They are habitats for many animals and plants, and are also used by humans for navigation, fishing, and leisure. The climate is another fundamental part of the Environment, as it determines the conditions of temperature, humidity, wind, rain, snow, etc. in a specific region.

Did you see how amazing and diverse the Environment is? Each part of it has its own characteristics and plays an important role in life on Earth. That's why it's so important for all of us to learn about it and do our part to protect it. So, are you ready to embark on this journey of discoveries? Let's go!

Practical Activity: 'Discovering the Characteristics of the Environment'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for groups of students to explore the different parts of the Environment and identify their main characteristics. In addition, they should reflect on the importance of each part for life on the planet and think of ways to preserve them.

Detailed Project Description

The groups will be divided into four teams, each responsible for a part of the Environment: Forest, Desert, River/Sea, and Climate. Each team should research and create an illustrated poster about the part of the Environment assigned to them, highlighting its main characteristics. In addition, they should include in their poster the importance of that part for life on Earth and an idea of how we can preserve it.

Necessary Materials

  • Large cardboard or poster board
  • Colored pens
  • Old magazines for cutouts (optional)
  • Glue
  • Blunt scissors
  • Materials for illustration (color pencils, crayons, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Group Division: Form the four groups of students, each responsible for a part of the Environment.

  2. Research: The groups should research the part of the Environment assigned to them. They can use textbooks, encyclopedias, reliable websites, or any other available source of information.

  3. Creation of the Poster: Based on the research, the groups should create an illustrated poster about the part of the Environment they studied. They should highlight the main characteristics, such as vegetation, animals, climate and soil conditions, and other relevant aspects.

  4. Importance and Preservation: In addition to the characteristics, the groups should include in the poster the importance of that part of the Environment for life on Earth and an idea of how we can preserve it. They can do this through text, drawings, or magazine cutouts (if available).

  5. Presentation: Finally, each group should present their poster to the class, explaining what they learned about the part of the Environment they studied and the ideas of importance and preservation they included in the work.

Remember, explorers, the Environment is our home and we depend on it to live. Let's do our best to understand, respect, and protect our planet!
