Hello, class! Have you ever stopped to think about how diverse our world is? Each person, each group has a unique history and culture that make us a great tapestry, rich in colors, languages, dances, music, and traditions. But, at the same time, there are many inequalities and injustices in our planet. Why?
In our project, we will explore the ethnic-racial and cultural ethnic differences and social inequalities that exist in our world. But, what does that mean?
Ethnic-racial differences refer to the physical and biological characteristics that distinguish the different human groups, such as skin color, eye shape, hair type, among others. On the other hand, ethnic and cultural diversity is the variety of traditions, customs, languages, beliefs, and values that exist among different human groups.
Social inequalities, in turn, are differences in access to resources, opportunities, and power among different social groups. Unfortunately, often these inequalities are related to ethnic-racial and cultural ethnic differences, which can lead to situations of prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion.
Importance of the Theme
Why is it important to learn and talk about this? Because, first of all, it helps us to better understand the world we live in. By knowing and respecting diversity, we can build a fairer and more peaceful world.
Secondly, understanding social inequalities is essential to promote justice and equity. When we know that there are people who have fewer opportunities because of their ethnic-racial or cultural background, we can work to change this reality.
Furthermore, this theme is directly related to geography. After all, geography studies the geographical space, that is, the characteristics of the Earth's surface, human relations, and forms of space occupation. And ethnic-racial differences, ethnic cultural differences, and social inequalities are a fundamental part of how the geographical space is occupied and experienced by people.

Practical Activity: 'Getting to Know Our Roots'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to promote a greater understanding of ethnic-racial and cultural ethnic differences and social inequalities, through research and presentation of different cultures present in our country.
Project Description
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will be invited to research a different ethnic-racial or cultural ethnic group present in Brazil. They should learn about the traditions, history, music, dance, cuisine, and typical festivals of this group. Additionally, they should also research the possible social inequalities that this group faces.
The groups will present their findings in an exhibition at school, where they will share what they have learned through posters, typical foods, dance or music performances, or a theater play.
Necessary Materials
- Books and encyclopedias about ethnic-racial and cultural ethnic groups.
- Access to the internet and electronic devices.
- Materials for creating the poster (paper, colored pencils, markers, scissors, glue, etc.).
- Ingredients and utensils for preparing the typical food (with adult supervision).
- Clothes or typical accessories for the presentations.
Step by Step

Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will be assigned a different ethnic-racial or cultural ethnic group to research.

Research: Each group should research the assigned culture. They should learn about the history, traditions, music, dance, cuisine, and typical festivals of this group. Additionally, they should also research the possible social inequalities that this group faces.

Exhibition Preparation: Based on their research, the groups should create a poster representing the culture they studied. They should also prepare a typical food, a music or dance performance, or a small theater play to share at the exhibition.

Exhibition: Each group will have a day to present their findings at school. They should set up the poster, prepare the typical food, and present their performance to the class and other teachers and school staff.
