Reading maps is a valuable skill for navigating the world around us. Maps are not just tools for finding directions, but also powerful forms of communication. They help us visualize patterns, trends, and complex geographical relationships that would be difficult to understand otherwise.

In this information age, where digital mapping technology is available at our fingertips, understanding how maps work is even more important. Often, we use digital maps like Google Maps and GPS to navigate without even realizing that we are using map-reading skills. Additionally, digital maps and satellite images are often used to understand and communicate information about natural disasters, climate change, urban planning, and much more.

Introduction

Maps have been used for centuries to explore, understand, and document our world. They have evolved from simple drawings in the sand to sophisticated and digital representations of the world, from our local environment to global geography. Map reading involves more than just knowing where things are—it involves understanding how places are interconnected and how geographic location influences people, the environment, and society.

The map has specific features, such as scale, coordinates, legend, and orientation, that help us understand and interpret what we are seeing. Additionally, the map also has a visual language, including colors, symbols, and patterns, that communicate information about the world around us.

The challenge of the project we propose to carry out is to understand how these components work together to help us interpret the geographic world, and to use this understanding to analyze the transformations that have occurred over time in cities through the reading of photographs, aerial photos, and satellite images.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Mapping City Transformations"

Project Objective

This activity aims to help students understand how maps evolve and change over time, and how we can learn about the history of a place through the analysis of sequences of maps, aerial photos, and satellite images.

Detailed Project Description

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose a city they wish to investigate. They will look for old maps of this city, aerial photos, and satellite images from different periods (as far back in the past and as recent as possible) to analyze how the city has changed over time.

Students will analyze the differences and similarities in the maps, aerial photos, and satellite images, paying special attention to changes in structures, land use, and natural resources. They will need to identify patterns in the changes that have occurred and speculate on the reasons for these changes.

Students should also verify the accuracy of the analyzed maps by comparing them with the most recent data, identifying possible errors or inconsistencies.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Access to old maps, aerial photos, and satellite images from different periods.
  • Paper and pen for notes and drawings.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Each group chooses the city they will study.
  2. Each group researches and collects old maps of that city, aerial photos, and satellite images from different periods.
  3. Students analyze and compare the maps, aerial photos, and satellite images, looking for changes and identifying patterns in the transformations.
  4. Students record their observations and findings, noting the differences and similarities they found.
  5. Each group verifies the accuracy of the maps by comparing them with more recent data.
  6. Each group creates a presentation of their findings. This presentation can take the form of a poster, a slide presentation, a video, or any other format the students prefer.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical activity, the groups should answer the following questions and write a document in the form of a report containing the answers to the questions. The report should follow the following structure:

  • Introduction: Tell the story of the chosen city, its relevance, and the project's objective.
  • Development: Present the theory behind map reading, the activity in detail, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
    • Theory: Explain concepts such as scale, coordinates, legend, orientation, and the visual language of maps.
    • Activity: Describe the activity carried out, the chosen city, the maps, aerial photographs, and satellite images selected and why they were chosen, how the analysis and comparison process was, and what were the main findings.
    • Methodology: Explain how the group organized to carry out the activity, how the maps, aerial photos, and satellite images were analyzed and compared.
    • Results: Present the main results of the analyses, the main changes identified, the patterns found, and the conjectures about the reasons for these changes.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, the learnings obtained, the conclusions drawn about the project, and how this impacted the understanding of map reading.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources consulted for the project, such as the maps and images found, the books, videos, websites consulted, among others.

The project, with the practical activity and the report, should take 5 to 10 hours of work for each student, and the deadline for the entire project will be one month after its start.
