Introduction

What are cities? Cities are human agglomerations, fixed and permanent, that gather a series of characteristics, such as significant population density, division of labor, infrastructure, government, and culture. They are the heart of the social, economic, and political life of a society.

What is urbanization? Urbanization is the process of growth and expansion of cities. When the first agricultural communities began to settle in one place, the population grew, and new needs arose, such as the construction of housing, the creation of laws, and the division of labor. Urbanization brought great changes to how people lived, worked, and related to each other.

Why is it important to study the birth of cities? Cities are the result of complex social, economic, and political transformations. They are centers of power, where decisions that affect the lives of many people are made. Moreover, cities are also spaces of cultural diversity, where different groups coexist and interact. Studying the birth of cities helps us understand how human societies are organized and how our own city was formed.

Activity Title: 'Building Our Own Cities'

Project Objective

This project aims to allow students to better understand the concepts of 'Birth of Cities' and 'Urbanization', while developing teamwork, communication, time management, problem-solving, and creativity skills. Additionally, it aims to stimulate students' interest in the History discipline and provide a practical learning experience.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will create their own city models, representing different stages of the 'Birth of Cities' and 'Urbanization'. Each stage of the city will represent an era or historical period, from the first agricultural communities to modern cities. Students should also present a brief report explaining the characteristics of each stage of the city represented in their model.

• Cardboard or styrofoam (for the base of the model)
• Cardboard or cardstock (for the buildings)
• Blunt scissors
• Glue
• Paints, colored pencils, or markers
• Ruler

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Definition of City Stages: Firstly, the groups should be formed. Each group should choose the city stages they will represent in their model (e.g., first agricultural community, city-state, medieval city, Renaissance city, industrial city, modern city, etc.).

2. Research: Each group should conduct research on the city stage they chose. They should look for information on what life was like in that city, what its characteristics were, how the housing, commerce, government, etc., were.

3. Model Planning: Based on the research, the groups should plan how their model will be. They should think about how to represent the main characteristics of the city in each chosen stage.

4. Model Construction: With the available materials, the groups should start building the model. They should work as a team, dividing tasks and helping each other.

5. Report: While building the model, students should write a brief report explaining the characteristics of each stage of the city in their model. The report should be clear and well-organized.

6. Presentation: At the end of the project, each group should present their model and report to the class. They should explain what they learned from the research, what the biggest difficulties were in building the model, and how they solved these problems.
