And each of these choices can have a different number of possibilities. How many types of bread do we have? And fillings? And sauces?

The Counting Principle is a fundamental mathematical tool that helps us calculate all these possibilities. It tells us that if we have m ways to do one thing and, after that, we have n ways to do another thing, then we have m x n ways to do both things together. Sounds complicated? Let's see a practical example.
Imagine you have 2 shirts and 3 pants. How many different outfits can you put together?
Using the Counting Principle, you can say that you have 2 ways to choose the shirt and 3 ways to choose the pants. Therefore, we have 2 x 3 = 6 possibilities for different outfits!
Now, multiplying 2 by 3 was easy, wasn't it? But what if we had 4 shirts and 5 pants? Would you be able to calculate how many different outfits we would have? That's what we're going to find out in this project!

Project Description
In this project, student groups will create a menu for an imaginary snack bar, where we will have to consider several options for breads, fillings, sauces, and drinks. Each item on the menu will have a different number of options, and the groups will have to calculate the total number of possible combinations.
Materials Required
- Paper and pencil to do the calculations.
- Drawing materials to create and decorate the menu.
Step by Step
Step 1: Forming the Groups
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members.
Step 2: Creating the Menu
Each group will create a menu for the snack bar. The menu should contain the following sections: "Sandwiches", "Drinks" and "Desserts".
In the "Sandwiches" section, students should think about different types of breads, fillings, and sauces that can be combined. In the "Drinks" section, they should list different options for juices and sodas. And in the "Desserts" section, they should think about different types of sweets.
Step 3: Counting the Possibilities
After creating the menu, each group should count how many different options they have in each section. For example, in the "Sandwiches" section, how many types of breads, fillings, and sauces are there?
Step 4: Calculating the Combinations
Now comes the fun part! The groups should use the Counting Principle to calculate how many different combinations of sandwiches, drinks, and desserts can be made. To do this, they should multiply the number of options for each section. For example, if we have 2 types of bread, 3 types of fillings, and 2 types of sauces, how many different sandwiches can we make?
Step 5: Presenting the Menu
Finally, the groups should present their menu to the class, showing all the possible combinations. They can use drawings and colors to make the menu even more beautiful!
Submission Format
Each group must submit their menu (handmade or digital) and a written report explaining how they applied the Counting Principle to calculate the combinations.
