Area is a measure that describes the extent of a surface. It is the number of square units needed to cover a figure. The more square units fit in the figure, the larger its area.

On the other hand, Perimeter is a measure that describes the outline of a figure. It is the sum of all sides of a figure. The greater the sum of the sides, the larger the perimeter.

These concepts are widely used in our daily lives, often without us realizing it. When we want to paint a wall, for example, we need to know its area to buy the right amount of paint. And if we want to fence our garden, what we need to know is the perimeter.

Now, you might be wondering: Why do we need to study this? Well, Geometry is an essential part of Mathematics that helps us understand the world around us more precisely. And Area and Perimeter are fundamental concepts in Geometry that are present in many situations in our daily lives. Therefore, by understanding them better, we can solve real problems more easily.

The Importance of Measurements for Geometry

Measuring is a very important skill in Mathematics. It allows us to compare quantities, identify patterns, and solve problems. In this project, besides learning about Area and Perimeter, you will also develop your measurement skills.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Comparing the Area and Perimeter of Shapes"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to understand in a practical and fun way the difference between the concepts of Area and Perimeter. In addition, the activity will stimulate collaboration, creativity, logical thinking, and communication skills of the students.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, students will build their own geometric shapes using string and paper. They will have to calculate both the Area and the Perimeter of each created figure. Then, they will compare the shapes, identifying which ones have the largest area and which ones have the largest perimeter.

Required Materials

  • A4 paper or cardboard
  • String
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Blunt scissors
  • Tape

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Explain the concept of Area and Perimeter. Review the concepts and show some examples for everyone to understand well.

  3. Distribute the materials to each group.

  4. Ask students to create their own geometric shapes. They can draw any figure they want on the paper using the pencil. Then, they should outline the figure with the string and cut it out.

  5. After the figures are ready, it's time to measure. Each group should measure the length of each string used to create the figures. This will be the Perimeter.

  6. Now, it's time for the Area. Ask students to fill the figures with small squares (can be done with pencil and ruler), counting how many squares are needed to cover each figure. This will be the Area calculation.

  7. Record the results. Each group should write down the value of the perimeter and area of each figure.

  8. Make the comparison. Now, the groups should compare the figures with each other, identifying which one has the largest area and which one has the largest perimeter.

  9. Prepare a presentation. Each group should prepare a short presentation for the class, showing the figures created, the calculations made, and the conclusions drawn.

  10. Finish the activity. After all presentations, have a classroom discussion about each group's findings. Reinforce the concepts of Area and Perimeter and assess if everyone understood well.

Delivery Format
