Fractions: Composing Shapes

Context

Theoretical Introduction

Mathematics is an essential tool for making sense of the world around us. We need it for everything from measuring cooking ingredients to understanding complex weather patterns. As we delve deeper into mathematics, we come across the concept of fractions, a fundamental idea that will permeate many areas of learning.

In elementary school, we begin to explore fractions. Basically, a fraction is a way to represent the division or part-to-whole relationship between two quantities. For example, if we have a whole pizza and we eat 3 slices out of 8, we can say that we have eaten 3/8 of the pizza. That's a fraction. Fractions are powerful because they allow us to talk about quantities that are not "whole"—that fall between one whole number and another.

Complementing the concept of fractions, we will explore the idea of 'shapes'. Shapes are a fundamental part of our world. They surround us at all times. We are going to focus on two-dimensional shapes, which are shapes that can be drawn on a flat piece of paper. They have height and width, but they do not have depth. For example, a circle is a two-dimensional shape. We can divide a circle (or any shape) into equal parts, each representing a fraction of the whole shape.

Relevance of the Topic

So, why does this topic matter? Well, understanding fractions and shapes is crucial in many areas. For instance, in architecture and design, shapes and their proportions are fundamental to creating buildings and objects that are not only visually pleasing but also functional. And, fractions are used to express those proportions.

Additionally, in science, scientists use fractions to quantify natural phenomena and conduct precise experiments. You can find fractions in cooking recipes, in art, in music, and in many more places. Fractions and shapes are fundamental parts of our world, and understanding how they work will open up a world of possibilities for you.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: "Constructing and Fractioning of Shapes"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide a playful learning environment where students can explore the concept of fractions through the composition and decomposition of shapes. Besides providing a solid conceptual understanding of fractions, the project also aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, collaboration, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

Project Description

For this project, students will form groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be tasked to create different two-dimensional shapes using playdough or clay, dividing these shapes into equal parts to represent fractions. Moreover, the students will calculate the proportion of different colors used in the composition of shapes and will also be challenged to rearrange or recompose the parts of shapes to create new ones. The project has an estimated duration of over twelve hours of work.

Materials

  1. Playdough or clay of different colors
  2. Ruler
  3. Pencils and paper
  4. Scissors
  5. Camera or cell phone to document the process

Step by Step

  1. Shapes Definition: Define which shapes will be made (e.g., square, rectangle, circle, triangle, etc.). Each group should choose a minimum of 4 different shapes.

  2. Shapes Construction: Using the playdough or clay, produce the selected shapes. The colors can be mixed to better visualize the fraction proportion.

  3. Division into Fractions: Each shape should be divided into equal parts, each part representing a fraction of the whole. Document into how many parts each shape was divided and what colors were used.

  4. Colors Proportion Calculation: Calculate the proportion of the colors used in each shape, representing them as fractions.

  5. Recomposition of Shapes: Rearrange or join parts of shapes to create new shapes.

  6. Process Documentation: Throughout the project, capture images of the process and write down relevant observations.

Project Deliverables

At the end, each group must present:

  • The original shapes, the recombined shapes, and the pictures of the process.

  • A written report containing:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the topic, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.
    • Development: Explanation of the theory of fractions and two-dimensional shapes, details of the activity carried out, indication of the methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the work, explicitation of the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The groups should organize and present their findings in a clear and logical manner, with an emphasis on how the project enabled them to understand the concepts of fractions and shapes. The written report should not only demonstrate the acquired knowledge but also reflect the students' collaboration and teamwork.
