Fractions: Concept of Conversion between Fractions and Decimal Numbers

Contextualization

The world of Mathematics is full of different and interconnected concepts. Thus, the conversion between fractions and decimal numbers, a theme we will address in this project, is one of those essential concepts for understanding the discipline.

Decimal notation is a common way to represent numbers in our daily lives, used to represent money, measurements, rates, and percentages. However, fractional notation also plays an important role and is commonly used in contexts involving divisions and proportions. Knowing how to convert decimal numbers into fractions, and vice versa, is a skill that has great applications in practical problems.

The conversion between these two notations allows us to more easily understand problems in real-world contexts. For example, a piece of fabric measuring 0.75 meters can be understood as 3/4 of a meter, or when sharing a pizza with friends, knowing that 1/2 of the pizza is equivalent to 0.5 of the pizza makes the sharing fairer. The ability to convert between these two notations is, therefore, a useful tool in various situations.

Decimal numbers and fractions are also key to understanding other more advanced mathematical concepts, such as the relationship between fractions and percentages, and the idea of rational numbers. In addition, the ability to convert between fractions and decimals is also used in other disciplines such as Science and Geography.

Practical Activity: Converting Treasures

Activity Title

Treasure Conversion: Adventures with Fractions and Decimals

Project Objective

This project aims to develop in students the technical skill of converting fractions into decimal numbers and vice versa, while also developing socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, proactivity, and creative thinking through collaborative and playful work.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will create a 'Treasure Map' where the steps to find the treasure will be given in fractions and decimal numbers. The map should be made on a piece of cardboard, and students can use colored pencils, pens, images, and whatever else they have available to make their map more realistic and interesting.

Each map must have at least 15 steps, and students are encouraged to use as much creativity as possible to describe the steps, including references to the school environment (library, classroom, sports court, etc.).

In addition to the map, students must also create a 'Conversion Book' where they will explain step by step how to convert each fraction and decimal used on the map to the other notation.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard sheet;
  • Colored pencils and pens;
  • Math books and online resources;

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Group discussion to develop the treasure map: Each step must be discussed and agreed upon by all group members.
  3. Development of the treasure map: Draw on the cardboard the steps to find the treasure, using both fractions and decimal numbers.
  4. Development of the Conversion Book: For each step, students must explain step by step how to convert the fractions into decimals and vice versa.
  5. Review and Corrections: The group must review the map and the book, correcting any possible errors.
  6. Preparation of the final report: The group must write a report containing the Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

  • Treasure Map: Students must deliver the creatively and didactically created map.
  • Conversion Book: Students must deliver a detailed book describing how each of the conversions was made.
  • Final Report: The group must present a document explaining the process of creating the map, what the difficulties were, and the strategies used to solve problems. The report must have the following sections:
    • Introduction: The group must contextualize the theme, present its relevance and real-life application, and the objective of this project.
    • Development: The group must explain the theory behind the conversion of fractions to decimals and vice versa, explain the activity in detail, describe the methodology used, and present the results obtained.
    • Conclusions: The group must summarize the main points of the project, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn.
    • Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources that were the basis for the project work, such as books, websites, videos, among others.

This project should be developed over three weeks, with students dedicating approximately four hours per week to its execution, totaling a workload of at least twelve hours per student.
