Introduction

Hello, little mathematicians! Let's embark on an exciting project to explore the wonderful universe of triangles and their components. Did you know that the triangle is one of the most basic and important geometric figures that exist? It is present in many objects and concepts that we see every day!

In our daily lives, we can find triangles in many things, such as a boat's sail, a slice of pizza, traffic signs, and even in a kite! That's why it's so important to know the components of triangles well, as it helps us better understand the world around us.

Contextualization

Have you ever stopped to think why, in some triangles, one of the side lengths is greater than the sum of the other two? And why in other triangles, the sum of the angles is always 180 degrees, no matter what the angles are? These are some of the things we will explore in this project!

Furthermore, understanding the components of a triangle also helps us solve more complex mathematical problems. For example, let's suppose you need to build a roof for your sandcastle. You would need triangles to form the roof! And if you knew how to calculate the measurements of the sides and angles of the triangles, it would make building the roof much easier, wouldn't it?

So, are you all ready to embark on this journey of mathematical discoveries? Get ready to have fun, work as a team, and, of course, learn a lot about triangles and their wonders! Let's go!

Practical Activity: 'Explorers of Triangles'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, little explorers, to venture into the world of triangles, understanding and unraveling their components and properties. Additionally, you will work as a team, exercising communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and time management skills.

Project Description

In this activity, each team will create a 'Triangle Book', in which they will explore and describe different types of triangles, their properties, and the methods to calculate their components. Each team should choose 3 different types of triangles (e.g., equilateral, isosceles, right-angled) and delve into their characteristics. You will work on drawings, research, problem-solving, and even create a story involving the chosen triangles!

Required Materials

  • A4 paper or cardboard to make the book pages
  • Pencils, erasers, rulers, compasses, and colors for drawing
  • Research materials (books, encyclopedias, internet, etc.)
  • Scissors and glue to assemble the book

Step by Step

  1. Team Formation: The teacher will divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students, who will work together throughout the project.

  2. Triangle Selection: Each team should choose 3 types of triangles to explore. They can be different (e.g., equilateral, isosceles, right-angled) or the same with different sizes (e.g., 3 right-angled triangles with different side lengths).

  3. Research: Now, it's time to research! Using the available materials, each team must gather information about the chosen triangles. You should discover the properties of each triangle, how to calculate their sides and angles, and what components differentiate them.

  4. Drawings: With the collected information, it's time to draw the triangles on each page of the book. Remember to pay attention to details and write down the properties of each triangle next to the drawings.

  5. Problem-Solving: Still in the 'Triangle Book', each team should create and solve 2 problems involving the chosen triangles. It could be something like 'If one side of the right-angled triangle measures 5cm and the other measures 12cm, how long is the hypotenuse?' or 'If an equilateral triangle has sides of 6cm, what is the measure of each angle?'. Use your imagination and have fun creating the problems!

  6. Triangle Story: Finally, each team must create a story involving the chosen triangles. In the story, the triangles should be the main characters, and the properties and components of each triangle should be mentioned. You can tell the story through drawings with small captions, or write a text, whichever you prefer.

  7. Book Assembly: After all activities are completed, it's time to assemble the 'Triangle Book'. Each page should be organized in the order in which the activities were carried out. Remember to leave space for the cover, where you should write the book's title and the names of the team members.

  8. Presentation: Finally, each team will present their 'Triangle Book' to the class. During the presentation, explain the properties of each triangle, solve the problems, and tell the story you created. Everyone should participate in the presentation, so divide the tasks among the team members.
