Hello, young mathematicians! Let's embark on an incredible mathematical journey, where we will explore the wonderful world of the areas of geometric figures. Have you ever stopped to think about how the area of a circle or a rectangle is calculated? Well, that's where area formulas come in, tools that help us find the measure of this 'internal surface' of the figures.

Area is a mathematical quantity that gives us an idea of how large or small a figure is. It is always expressed in square units, such as cm² (square centimeters), m² (square meters), and so on. And why is it important to know the areas of figures? Because the area is present in our daily lives more than we imagine! Whether it's calculating the amount of paint needed to paint a wall, or knowing the size of a plot of land, the area is there, being our ally.

Now, let's talk about area formulas. They are like mathematical recipes that help us calculate the area of different figures. Each figure has its specific formula, which takes into account the measurements of its sides. For example, the formula to calculate the area of a circle uses the value of its radius; that of the rectangle uses the value of the base and height; and so on.

Introduction

In our daily lives, we deal with different shapes and figures all the time. Some are simple, like the square and the rectangle, while others are more complex, like the circle. However, all these figures have something in common: the area. The area of a figure is a measure that tells us how many area units are needed to cover that figure.

In the case of the square and the rectangle, the area formula is quite simple: just multiply the base by the height. In the case of the circle, the formula is a bit more complex: the area is equal to the product of the square of the radius by the value of π (pi), which is a mathematical constant.

Mastering area formulas is very important because it allows us not only to better understand geometric figures but also to solve problems in our daily lives. For example, if you need to know the area of a rectangular plot to plant a garden, the rectangle area formula will help you in this task.

Furthermore, knowing area formulas also helps us to perceive the connections between different areas of mathematics. For example, the formula for the circle uses the value of π, which is a mathematical constant. Knowing how to use this formula involves not only geometry but also arithmetic and algebra. So, as we can see, area formulas are much more than simple calculation tools – they are a gateway to a fascinating world of mathematical discoveries!

Practical Activity: 'Exploring Area Formulas'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to explore and understand the area formulas of different figures, such as the square, rectangle, and circle. In addition, students will practice important socio-emotional skills, such as time management, effective communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

Project Description

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5, will create an 'Area Museum' in the classroom. Each group will be responsible for a geometric figure (square, rectangle, or circle) and will have to:

  1. Research about the figure and its area formula, including the origin and importance of this formula in mathematics and everyday life;
  2. Build a life-size model of the figure using materials available in the classroom;
  3. Calculate the area of the model using the formula and present the result on an informative plaque;
  4. Prepare an oral presentation to share the findings with the class.

Necessary Materials

  • Cardboard or poster board
  • Ruler
  • Pencils, erasers, and colored pens
  • Blunt scissors
  • String
  • Barbecue stick or straw
  • Paint and brush (for the circle)
  • Compass (for the circle)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Organize the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Figure Selection and Research: Each group must choose a figure (square, rectangle, or circle) and research about it and its area formula. They should find out how the formula is used to calculate the area of the figure and in what everyday situations this formula is useful.

  3. Model Construction: Using cardboard or poster board, students must draw and cut out the chosen figure in real size. They can use the ruler to help draw straight lines and the compass (or a round object like a plate) for the circle.

  4. Calculation and Informative Plaque: After building the model, students must calculate the area of the figure using the correct formula. They should write down the calculation and the result on an informative plaque that will accompany the model in the 'Area Museum'.

  5. Preparation of Oral Presentation: Finally, students must prepare an oral presentation to share what they have learned with the class. They should explain the area formula of the chosen figure, how they built the model, how they calculated the area, and what were the most interesting discoveries during the project.

  6. Setting up the 'Area Museum': On the scheduled date, the groups will set up the 'Area Museum' in the classroom, displaying their models and informative plaques. Each group will have time to present their work to the class.

Delivery Format

Each group must present their 'Area Museum' to the class and deliver the informative plaque with the calculation of the area of the chosen figure. The presentation should be recorded in video or audio to enable later evaluation. In addition, each student must submit a short written reflection, of up to one page, about what they learned during the project and how the experience of working in a team was.
