Introduction

Mathematics is present in several activities of our daily life, being an important tool for understanding and interacting with the world around us. In this sense, multiplying and dividing decimals are fundamental skills that open doors for a series of situations and problems that we may face.

Multiplication is a basic operation that expresses the idea of repetitive addition, which is widely used to solve everyday problems in science, engineering, among other areas. Dividing decimals, on the other hand, is a way to divide a whole number or decimal into equal parts. Both operations are inverses of each other: dividing is the inverse of multiplying.

The manipulation of decimals is an essential skill in several real-life situations, as in commerce, civil construction, cooking, among others. And understanding how to multiply and divide these numbers is an important step to develop a more complete mathematical fluency.

Contextualization

The topic "Multiplying and dividing decimals" is essential, since these concepts are used in several areas of our daily life, as well as in more advanced mathematics. These operations are used in different situations, as for example, to calculate discounts in stores, to split the bill at a restaurant, or to calculate areas and volumes in construction projects.

In addition, a solid understanding of multiplying and dividing is fundamental to study algebra, complex numbers, trigonometrical functions, and other advanced mathematics concepts. Therefore, learning how to correctly manipulate these numbers is an important step in the educational journey of any student.

Practical Activity: "Exploring the world of decimals through real-life simulations"

Objective of the project

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical and theoretical understanding of multiplying and dividing decimals through interactive and fun real-life simulations.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, each group having to elaborate and solve multiplication and division problems using decimals based on real-life scenarios. The proposed scenarios can be, for example, a sweet shop, a marketplace, a restaurant, and others in which the students can identify the use of these mathematical operations.

Materials:

  • Paper, pen, and rubber;
  • Calculator;
  • Research material (school books, the web, etc.);
  • Presentation material (computer or poster board, colorful markers, etc.).

Step-by-step project

  1. Forming groups: The students will be organized in groups of 3 to 5 members;

  2. Defining the scenario: Each group will choose a real-life scenario where the application of the multiplication and division of decimals is seen;

  3. Creating the problems: Based on the scenario, the students will create at least five problems involving the multiplication and division of decimals. These problems must be real, and connected to the scenario;

  4. Solving the problems: The students will solve the problems they created in collaboration, sharing strategies and solutions;

  5. Creating the presentation: The students will prepare a presentation explaining their scenario, the problems they created, and how they came about the solutions. The presentation can be done using computer slides or a poster board and markers;

  6. Presenting the project: On a previously established date, each group will present their project to the class. They will explain the scenario they chose, the problems they developed, and how they solved them.

Final product, and how it connects to the activities:

Based on the practical activity, the students will produce a report that must be structured in the following manner:

  1. Introduction: The students must contextualize the subject and explain the objective of the project;

  2. Elaboration: On this section, the students must describe the chosen scenario, explain the theory behind the multiplication and division of decimals, describe in detail the elaborated problems and their solutions. It is important that the students indicate the strategies used to solve the problems and their learnings with each of the strategies;

  3. Conclusion: The students must return to the main points of work, the learning obtained, and the conclusions reached regarding the project;

  4. Bibliography: The students must indicate the sources used to elaborate the problems and their solutions, as books, websites, videos, etc.

This report shall be the final submission for this work, it must be written clearly, using the correct mathematical formulas, and must show a clear understanding of the use of the multiplication and division of decimals in real-life situations.
