Contextualization

Mathematics helps us understand and interpret the world more accurately. Through graphs, mathematics becomes visual and easier to understand. Visual representations of data, also known as graphs, are powerful tools that allow us to visualize, analyze, and interpret data efficiently and effectively.

Graphs are a fantastic way to visualize data. They can help us understand trends, make comparisons, and make decisions based on clear and concise information. Learning to create and interpret graphs is a valuable skill in many fields, including business, science, technology, engineering, health, and even in our daily personal activities.

In today's world, graphs are used in countless areas and situations. In sports, for example, they are used to visualize the performance of an athlete or a team. In the sales sector, to analyze the sales performance of products. In meteorology, graphs are used to predict the weather, and in education, teachers use graphs to represent students' performance.

They are also essential for making informed decisions, as they allow a clear and quick visualization of complex information. For example, a doctor can use graphs to understand the progression of a disease in a patient, an engineer can use it to understand the performance of a machine, or an economist to understand the fluctuation of a country's GDP.

Practical Activity: "Our Class in Graphs"

Objective

The objective of this project is for students to learn how to collect data, organize this data into tables, and represent it through column, pictorial, and line graphs. They will also work on skills such as communication, time management, and teamwork.

Description

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 members and will have to research and collect data about their class year. They should choose at least three topics to be researched (examples: classmates' height, favorite subject, number of siblings and pets they have at home, etc).

After collecting the data, they will organize it into tables and then represent this data through three different types of graphs: columns, pictorial, and lines.

Necessary Materials

  • Paper and pen/pencil to write down classmates' answers
  • Computer with internet access for research and graph development (software like Excel or Google Sheets can be used)
  • Camera or smartphone to record the research and graph development process

Step by Step

  1. Formation of groups and choice of topics to be researched.
  2. Definition of an action plan for data collection.
  3. Data collection with classmates.
  4. Organization of collected data into tables.
  5. Development of graphs on the computer or by hand.
  6. Review of work and corrections if necessary.
  7. Preparation of the final project report.

Project Deliverables

After the practical stages, each group will prepare a report containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: In this section, the group should contextualize the research topic, explain the relevance of learning about graphs, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Here, the theory behind the graphs should be explained, detailing the activity carried out, the methodology used for data collection, the choice of topics researched, and the development of the graphs. In addition, they should present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Students should summarize the main points, highlight the learnings acquired during the project, and draw conclusions from the analysis of the graphs.

  4. Bibliography: Finally, indicate the sources consulted to carry out the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others.

Note: The report should be written clearly and organized. In addition, images of the created graphs should be included in the report. It is important that the conclusions align with the data presented.

Delivery Time: 1 month from the project start date.
