Contextualization

The conversion between units of measurement is an essential skill in many fields of knowledge. Whether in our daily lives, when we need to understand the quantity of ingredients for a recipe we are preparing, or in various professions such as engineering, architecture, chemistry, physics, among others.

Understanding the relationship between mass and volume is fundamental for the calculation of density, a concept that will be very important throughout the study of sciences. In addition, the conversion between units of measurement is a skill that will be constantly used in disciplines such as Mathematics and Physics throughout all years of study.

Theoretical Introduction

What are measures of mass and volume?

Measures of mass are used to quantify the amount of matter in an object, while measures of volume are used to determine the space that an object occupies. Both are fundamental quantities in the study of physics and mathematics.

The importance of units of measurement

Units of measurement are essential for us to quantify and compare quantities. Without them, it would be impossible, for example, to say if one object is heavier than another or if one box holds more liquid than another.

The conversion between units of measurement

The conversion between units of measurement is the ability to change the unit of measurement of a quantity without changing the quantity that the measurement represents. This ability is crucial in various fields of knowledge.

Practical Activity - Project "The Art of Conversion"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to create an art exhibition that explores and exemplifies the concept of conversion between units of measurement, more specifically mass and volume, through the creative use of everyday objects and materials.

Project Description

Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for creating a physical or virtual art exhibition, depending on the conditions, with at least 5 works that exemplify different aspects of the conversion between units of measurement of mass and volume.

Students should also prepare a guided tour of the exhibition, explaining the connection of each artwork to the mathematical concepts involved. This tour can be recorded on video, conducted live, or written, depending on the conditions.

The exhibition and the guided tour should be designed for the audience of your school, that is, they should be understandable and interesting for your classmates, teachers, and staff.

Necessary Materials

  1. Materials for creating the artworks (recyclable materials, paint, cardboard, paper, clay, etc.).
  2. Video recording equipment (if applicable).
  3. Books and research materials.
  4. Computer or tablet for preparing the report.

Step by Step

  1. Form the groups and discuss the project to ensure everyone understands the requirements.
  2. Start researching about conversion of units of measurement, using the suggested resources and others you find useful.
  3. Brainstorm ideas for the artworks. Remember that each artwork should represent a different aspect of the conversion of units of measurement.
  4. Create a sketch or plan for each artwork.
  5. Gather the necessary materials.
  6. Start building the artworks.
  7. While building, think about how you will explain the connection between the artwork and the conversion of units of measurement.
  8. When all artworks are ready, organize the exhibition and prepare for the tour.
  9. Conduct the guided tour, whether by recording a video, live, or in writing.
  10. Write a detailed report on the process of creating the exhibition, the explanation of each artwork, the application of mathematical concepts.

Project Deliverables

After completing the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The art exhibition, either physically or in photos/videos.
  2. The guided tour of the exhibition, whether in video, live, or written.
  3. A written report detailing the process of creating the exhibition, the explanation of each artwork, the application of mathematical concepts, and a critical analysis of the project. The report should include: a. Introduction: Contextualize the theme, relevance, real-world application, and project objective. b. Development: Explain the theory of the central themes worked on, explain the activities, the methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained. c. Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn. d. Bibliography: Indicate the sources that supported the group's work.

Through this practical activity, it is expected that students develop technical skills related to the conversion of units of measurement and understanding of related concepts, as well as socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
