Context

Introduction

Converting units of time is a fundamental mathematical concept that is extensively applied in our daily lives. The ability to convert units of time, such as seconds, minutes, and hours, is essential for many aspects of daily life, including scheduling, timetabling, and travel.

Time frames are of paramount importance to how we organize our daily lives. We are constantly making references to time in various forms, whether we are trying to schedule an appointment or measure the duration of an activity. In this sense, it is essential that we move away from the idea of time as a fixed and unchanging entity, towards an understanding that time can be measured in a variety of ways.

For instance, if we ask the duration of a class, we might get answers such as "50 minutes," "One hour minus ten minutes," or even "3000 seconds." One can clearly see that the same length of time has been expressed in three different ways. This highlights the importance of understanding how different units of time relate to one another and how we can convert from one unit to another.

Through an engaging and educational project, we aim for students from grades 1 to 5 to develop an understanding of and ability to convert units of time, applying these concepts to practical, real-world scenarios.

Background

In our day-to-day lives, we are constantly measuring, counting, and quantifying time. Whether we are watching a movie, playing soccer with friends, cooking a favorite dish, or planting a tree in our backyard, the notion of time is constantly present in our actions. It is, therefore, essential to understand how time is measured and how we can convert these measurements to suit our needs.

The ability to convert units of time is not only a valuable mathematical skill, but also a vital competency in many professions. Scientists, engineers, cooks, athletes, musicians, and many other professionals need to understand and apply this concept in their work.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: Sundials - Learning to Measure Time

Project Aim

The purpose of this activity is for students to learn how to convert units of time by constructing a sundial, one of the oldest forms of timekeeping. Building a sundial will help to connect theoretical concepts to practical applications, emphasizing the relevance of the topic. Furthermore, the project aims to develop students' collaboration, creativity, and time management skills.

Detailed Project Description

As part of this activity, students will construct a sundial and then use it to take time measurements. Working in groups of 3 to 5, students will research, plan, build, and test their sundial. They will then use the data collected to convert time measurements and produce a report on their experience.

This interdisciplinary project incorporates science, where students will learn about the position and movement of the sun, and mathematics, when converting time measurements.

Required Materials

  • A stick or dowel rod approximately 30 cm in length
  • A flat base (this can be made of wood, metal, or cardboard)
  • A regular clock
  • A compass
  • A pencil
  • A ruler

Step-by-Step Activity Instructions

  1. Research and Planning: Students should research how sundials work, how to build one, and how to interpret the information they provide. This research will help students to understand the theoretical concept of time measurement.
  2. Building the Sundial: Using the stick or dowel, students will fix it upright into the flat base so that it is standing completely vertical. Then, over the course of a sunny morning or afternoon, students will mark the shadow of the stick at each whole hour, using the regular clock as a reference. Each time a mark is made, students should record the corresponding time.
  3. Measuring Time: Over a period of several days, students should observe and record the shadows cast on the sundial and the corresponding time on the regular clock.
  4. Converting Time: Using the data they have collected, students should convert the time measurements between different units (seconds, minutes, and hours).

Project Deliverables

Students will present their constructed sundial and a written report in the format of a scientific paper, covering the four main sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, and References.

  • Introduction: Include a brief summary of the purpose of the project, the real-world relevance of the topic (converting time), and how the project helps to understand and apply this concept.
  • Methods: Describe in detail the methodology used to construct the sundial and to collect and convert the units of time. Key events, difficulties encountered, and how they were resolved should be included, as well as a record of the time measurements collected and the conversions made.
  • Results and Discussions: Students should reflect on what they have learned throughout the project, the skills they have acquired or improved (such as collaboration, time management, and problem-solving), and the importance of the project topic (converting time) in everyday life.
  • References: Cite all research sources used throughout the duration of the project, including books, webpages, videos, etc.
