Contextualization

Fractions are one of the most fundamental mathematical tools and are used in almost every aspect of daily life. Whether we are dividing a pizza, splitting the time of a game, or even measuring the amount of water in a cup, we are using fractions. They are a key concept in the development of mathematical reasoning, as the ability to understand and work with fractions helps students to develop a strong number sense and the ability to think quantitatively.

Understanding fractions involves more than just being able to divide an object or quantity into equal parts. It also requires understanding that a fraction is a part of a whole and that it can be represented in a variety of ways, such as a number, on a number line, or visually as part of an object. As such, it is crucial to develop visual reasoning and comprehension skills, in addition to computational skills.

Introduction

Math is all around us, and fractions are one of the most important aspects of it. They're used to represent parts of a whole, and as such, they're essential for understanding many basic concepts in math and everyday life. For example, when you divide a pizza into 8 equal slices and eat 2 of them, you have eaten 2/8 or 1/4 of the pizza. That's a fraction.

Our understanding of fractions begins early, in elementary school, when we are first introduced to the concept, and continues to develop throughout our schooling. In this project, we will explore this important concept further. Through hands-on and theoretical activities, we will develop a deeper understanding and application of the concept of fractions.

Hands-on Activity

Title: The Fraction Pizzeria

Goal of the Activity:

The goal of this project is to allow students to understand how fractions work in the real world and how they can be applied. The project also aims to enhance teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Project Description:

Students will design and run their own pizza restaurant, taking orders and "making" cardboard pizzas that correctly represent the fractions ordered.

Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • A4 paper
  • Pencils and erasers

Step-by-Step:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3-5 students.
  2. Each group should draw and cut out a reasonably sized circle from the cardboard to represent a pizza.
  3. The groups should then create a pizza menu that includes at least five "flavors". Each flavor should be represented by a different color made with the markers.
  4. Each group will then take orders from the other groups, including the amount of pizza (in fractions) and the desired flavor.
  5. Each group must then "make" the pizza to fulfill the orders, coloring the correct amount of the pizza with the color corresponding to the flavor.
  6. Finally, each group should present their pizzas along with the orders they received and explain how they fulfilled the orders using fractions.

Students should dedicate two to four hours to the hands-on activity, which can be spread out over the course of a week.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the week, each group should turn in:

  1. Their cardboard pizzas along with the orders they fulfilled.
  2. A written report detailing their experience. The report should contain:
    • Introduction: Explain the concept of fractions and its application in the activity developed.
    • Development: Describe the theory behind the use of fractions in the project, the step-by-step process carried out, the methodology used in the activity, and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Recap the main points covered in the report, discuss what they learned about fractions and teamwork during the activity, and what conclusions they drew from the project.
    • Bibliography: Reference the sources of research and learning on the topic, such as textbooks, websites, and videos used during the activity.

It is essential that students approach the report as an opportunity to detail their hands-on experience, reflect on what they learned, and how it added to their prior knowledge of fractions. The report should serve as a junction of their practical work with the acquired theory.
