Mathematics is a field of knowledge that is present in all aspects of our lives, from the moment we wake up until bedtime. It is through mathematics that we can solve problems, better understand the world around us, and make discoveries. In this project, we will delve into a very important concept: area conversion.

Conversion is a key skill in mathematics that allows us to transform a measurement from one unit to another. When we talk about area, we are referring to the measurement of surfaces in 2 dimensions. To understand area conversions, we need to think about how we can go from one unit, such as square meter (m²), to another, such as square centimeter (cm²), for example.

Area conversion is especially useful in various practical applications. When we are going to paint a room, for example, we need to know the area of the walls to buy the correct amount of paint. When we are going to buy a piece of land, we need to convert the area measurements to understand how much space we have to build. It is a skill that is part of daily life and is very valuable in various professions, such as civil construction, architecture, and interior design.

Furthermore, area conversion helps us develop important skills, such as logical reasoning, problem-solving, and critical thinking. By mastering this concept, we are able to solve complex problems, make informed decisions, and advance in our mathematics studies.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Transforming Spaces

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the concepts of area measurement conversion in planning the renovation of a fictional space, such as a room in a house or a schoolyard.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be tasked with planning the renovation of a fictional space using their area measurement conversion skills. The space will be measured in one unit (square meters, for example), and the students will need to convert this measurement to other units (such as square centimeters, for example) in order to plan the use of materials and furniture in their projects.

Required Materials

  1. Graph paper for drawing the floor plan.
  2. Pencils and erasers.
  3. Ruler.
  4. Calculator.
  5. Internet for furniture and material research (optional).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Choose a fictional space for each group to renovate. It can be a living room, a bedroom, a patio, etc. Give them the measurement of this space in a specific unit (square meters, for example).
  3. Ask each group to draw the space to scale on graph paper using the given unit of measurement.
  4. The groups should then decide how they want to renovate the space. For example: paint the walls, add furniture, plants, etc.
  5. The measurements of the furniture and other items should be converted to the same unit of measurement as the space so that they can decide where to place each item on the floor plan.
  6. The groups should research the cost of materials and furniture and provide an estimate of the total renovation cost.
  7. Finally, each group should present their final project, explaining the conversions made and justifying their design choices.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, in addition to the oral presentation, each group must submit a written report containing:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen fictional space, relevance and application of the area conversion concept in the activity.

  2. Development: Detailed calculations and conversions performed, detailed description of the planned renovation and the methodology used for planning, discussion of the results obtained (such as the final floor plan and cost estimate).

  3. Conclusions: Reflection on what was learned during the project, the challenges encountered, how teamwork contributed to the final result, and how area conversion concepts are applied in real life.

  4. Bibliography: Citation of sources consulted during the project, such as construction materials and furniture store websites, mathematics books, educational websites, etc.

In this way, students will be working not only on the mathematical content in question but also on technical writing, oral communication, teamwork, and project management, essential skills in the current world.
