Contextualization
Introduction
Balanced and healthy eating is one of the key points for maintaining health and well-being, being one of the fundamental pillars to be worked on since childhood. Understanding the different food groups, their characteristics, and importance is vital to ensure a better quality of life. At the same time, it is important to note that the lack or excess of certain nutrients can lead to eating disorders such as obesity and malnutrition, respectively.
In this context, this project proposes that students from 1st to 5th grade of elementary school engage in a collaborative activity focused on learning more about the different food groups and the main eating disorders, through the creation of a 'Balanced Menu' and an 'Informative Brochure' about eating disorders.
Relevance of the Theme and Real-World Applications
Balanced nutrition is a matter of great relevance, as it is directly linked to our health and well-being. Understanding the different food groups and the need for a balance between them helps in the prevention of diseases and eating disorders, such as obesity and malnutrition. In this sense, the practical application of this knowledge is clearly observed in everyday life, from choosing food at the supermarket to preparing meals.
At the same time, understanding the main eating disorders present in society is also fundamental. By knowing these conditions, we can prevent and identify them, whether in ourselves or in close people, enabling early and adequate intervention.

Activity Title: 'CREATING A BALANCED MENU AND AN INFORMATIVE BROCHURE'
Project Objective
Apply the knowledge acquired about food groups in the creation of a 'Balanced Menu' and create an 'Informative Brochure' about main eating disorders.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will have to perform two main tasks:
-
Task 1: Creation of a 'Balanced Menu' for one day, involving three main meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and two snacks (morning and afternoon). The menu should be colorful, creative, and contain foods from different food groups in correct quantities.
-
Task 2: Creation of an 'Informative Brochure' about an eating disorder, including: definition, causes, signs and symptoms, precautions, and where to seek help. The brochure should be clear, informative, and easy to understand.
Necessary Materials
- A4 paper
- Pencils and colored pens
- Computer with internet access
- Books or reference materials on nutrition and eating disorders
- Printer (optional)
Detailed Step-by-Step
-
Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
-
Explain the tasks to be performed and provide the necessary materials.
-
Guide students to start their research, both for creating the balanced menu and the informative brochure.
-
In Task 1, students should consider the foods that make up each food group, as well as the necessary quantity of each for a balanced diet.
-
In Task 2, they should choose an eating disorder to investigate, researching its causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment.
-
Once the research is completed, groups should create their menus and brochures. It is recommended that students work together, dividing tasks and collaborating in creating the materials.
-
After completing the work, groups should prepare a presentation to explain their menu and brochure to the class.
Project Deliverables and Connection with Activities
After completing the practical activities, students should write a written document reporting their findings and learnings. The document should contain four sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
In the Introduction, students should contextualize the theme, explaining why proper nutrition and knowledge about eating disorders are important and the objective of this project.
The Development should explain the theory behind the central themes of the project (food groups and eating disorders), the steps followed in carrying out the activities (creating the menu and brochure), and the results obtained.
In the Conclusions section, students should summarize the main points of the work, highlighting what they learned from the project and the conclusions they reached regarding the importance of a balanced diet and knowledge about eating disorders.
Finally, in the Bibliography, students should cite all sources used for research and project implementation.
