Contextualization

Nature, with its infinite richness of species and ecological functions, offers a series of services that are fundamental to our survival and well-being. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the medicines we take are just a few examples of how we depend on nature. Furthermore, it is responsible for regulating the climate, controlling pests and diseases, pollinating plants, forming soils, among many other functions.

However, our actions are causing the disappearance of species, the degradation of ecosystems, air and water pollution, climate change, among other environmental problems. If we continue at this pace, we may compromise our own survival and that of future generations. Therefore, the conservation of nature is so important and necessary.

In this project, we will learn about the principles and practices of nature conservation. We will understand how nature works, what environmental problems we are facing, why they occur, what their consequences are, and what we can do to solve them.

Introduction

Nature conservation is a field of study and action that seeks to protect and recover nature, as well as sustainably use its resources. For this, it is based on knowledge from various areas, such as ecology, biology, geology, climatology, society, economy, politics, laws, among others. Understanding this interdisciplinarity is essential to understand how nature conservation works and can be put into practice.

First, we need to understand how nature works. Ecology helps us in this task, studying the relationships between living beings and between them and the environment, as well as the processes that govern the functioning of ecosystems. Next, we need to understand what environmental problems we are facing. For this, we need to use our knowledge from various areas to identify the causes, consequences, and possible solutions to these problems.

Finally, we need to act to solve these problems and prevent their recurrence. This involves creating environmental laws and policies, carrying out environmental protection and restoration actions, promoting environmental education, adopting sustainable practices in our daily activities, among other actions. With this, we hope that you feel motivated to learn and act for the conservation of nature.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Nature Architects"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to stimulate students' understanding of the importance of nature conservation and the impacts of biodiversity loss. For this, students will develop a miniature "Nature Conservation Park," representing different biomes and natural habitats and their respective animal and plant species.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups will study a specific biome and reproduce it in a miniature park. Each miniature park must present specific details of the biome, such as the type of vegetation, animals that inhabit it, climate and soil peculiarities, among others. The project should also include information about the threats the biome faces and the conservation measures that can be implemented.

Students will have the opportunity to apply theory in a practical activity, where they can visualize and materialize the concepts learned. In addition, the activity promotes teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and communication, as students will present their parks to the class and explain the work done.

Required Materials:

  • Shoeboxes / cardboard boxes
  • Craft materials (paper, glue, scissors, colored pencils, paints, etc.)
  • Natural materials (rocks, leaves, twigs)
  • Internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should choose or be assigned a specific biome to study.
  3. Students should research and learn about the chosen biome, including flora, fauna, climate, soil, threats, and conservation measures. They can use the resources mentioned in the 'Study Resources' section and others of their choice.
  4. With the collected information, students should plan the design of their miniature "Nature Conservation Park."
  5. Using shoeboxes / cardboard boxes and craft materials, students should build their miniatures. They should try to represent the main aspects of their biome, including topography, vegetation, animals, and bodies of water, if applicable.
  6. After building the park, students should prepare an oral presentation to present their parks to the class, explaining the characteristics of the biome they represented and the proposed conservation strategies.

Project Delivery

Along with the oral presentation and the model, each group should prepare a written report following these guidelines:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen biome, its relevance, and the reasons for its conservation.
  2. Development: Detailed discussion of the biome's characteristics, including flora, fauna, climate, soil, threats, and conservation measures. Description of the process of creating the miniature park, explaining the choices made in representing the biome and the techniques used.
  3. Conclusions: Reflection on what was learned through the project, the importance of understanding and conserving different biomes, and the role of each in maintaining ecological balance.
  4. Bibliography: Inclusion of all sources consulted during the project.

The report should complement the oral presentation and the model, providing more details and information about the chosen biome and the group's learning experience.
