Reading and Text Comprehension

Context

Reading is a fundamental skill that not only allows us to absorb information but also to expand our thinking and our understanding of the world around us. It is the basis of all academic disciplines, bridging the gap between existing knowledge and our ability to learn, grow, and explore new concepts.

Reading comprehension, in turn, is the ability to understand what has been read, to construct and extract meanings, both explicit and implicit, from texts. To become a competent reader, it is necessary to master not only the technical aspects of reading, such as decoding words, but also to develop critical and reflective thinking skills, which allow us to interpret and evaluate the information contained in texts.

The practice of reading and reading comprehension is essential in the formation of the individual, serving as a foundation for the construction of knowledge from various fields of knowledge. In addition, it is through reading that we are able to position ourselves critically before the world, making informed and conscious choices.

In the contemporary world, reading is present in practically all situations of our daily lives. It is required from reading a product label in the supermarket, through the instructions for using a medication, to understanding news and complex articles in different media.

The improvement of these reading skills, therefore, contributes not only to the students' school and academic development, but also to their formation as active and conscious subjects in society.

Practical Activity: Literary Adventure

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to expand the reading comprehension of students through interactive and engaging activities that develop critical reading, analysis, and interpretation of texts. In addition, the activity proposes teamwork, collaboration, and time management.

Project Description

The project "Literary Adventure" proposes that students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, create an interactive story based on a book that will be previously read and analyzed by the group. The interactive story should be thought of as a game, where the reader has action options that can change the course of the story. It should be produced on a physical medium, such as a panel or model, becoming a tactile reading resource.

Necessary Materials

  1. Book chosen for reading and analysis
  2. Cardboard, card stock, card stock or other materials for making the panel or model
  3. Pens, colored pencils, crayons or other drawing/painting tools
  4. Glue, scissors, tape or other collage materials
  5. Additional resources that they consider interesting to illustrate the story.

Step by step

  1. Group formation: Students should be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. This can be done by drawing or free choice.

  2. Choosing the book: Each group must choose a book to read. The teacher can provide a list of suggestions or allow students to choose freely, respecting the appropriate reading comprehension level.

  3. Reading and analysis of the book: The group should do a collective reading of the book, promoting discussions and critical analysis of the work. Students should identify the main points of the story, characters, setting, and important events.

  4. Creating the interactive story: Based on the reading and analysis of the book, the group should create an interactive story, designating different conclusions according to the choices made by the reader.

  5. Creation of the panel or model: Students should use the available materials to create a panel or model that visually represents the interactive story. There should be distinct paths leading to different endings.

  6. Presentation of the works: After the completion of the panels or models, each group should present their "Literary Adventure" to the class, explaining the story and demonstrating the possible choices and outcomes.

  7. Writing the written document: Each group should write a report on the project, containing the sections Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography.

In the introduction, they should contextualize the chosen book and the objective of the project. In the development, they should explain the process of reading and analyzing the book, the creation of the interactive story and the panel or model, indicating the methodology used. Each step should be explained in detail and the results, such as the panel or model created, should be discussed. In the conclusion, students should reinterpret the main points of the project, pointing out the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn. In the bibliography, they should indicate the sources used, such as the book read and possible websites, articles or videos that have helped in the process.

Project Delivery

The project delivery will consist of the presentation of the "Literary Adventure", where the students will demonstrate the created story and how the reader's choices can influence the outcomes. In addition, each group must submit a written report, summarizing the entire creation process, the difficulties, and the team's learnings.
