Language is a powerful tool we have to express our thoughts, ideas, and emotions. In the context of the Portuguese language, there is an interesting and fundamental distinction between words we call primitive and derived. First of all, let's understand what they are.

Primitive words are those that give rise to other words and do not derive from any other within the Portuguese language. Examples include: pedra (stone), lua (moon), sol (sun), casa (house), among others. On the other hand, derived words, as the name suggests, derive from other words, either by adding prefixes, suffixes, or both. Some examples are: pedreira (from 'pedra'), luar (from 'lua'), solar (from 'sol'), casarão (from 'casa'), etc.

In addition to primitive and derived words, we have compound words that are formed by more than one root, that is, by two or more primitive words. See examples: passatempo (passa + tempo), girassol (gira + sol), etc.

Studying and understanding these concepts is essential for a better command of the Portuguese language, as they appear in reading, writing, and daily life. The more we expand our vocabulary and understand the structures of words, the more capable we will be to express ourselves in a precise and creative way.

These words not only help us express thoughts and feelings but also understand the world around us. For example, when reading a text, understanding whether a word is primitive, derived, or compound can help us better grasp the author's intention. Or, when writing, knowing how to use these types of words can allow us to convey our ideas more clearly and impactfully.

Project Objective:

This project aims not only to teach the difference between primitive and derived words but also to challenge students to create their own derived words from primitive words, stimulating creative thinking and a deeper understanding of the structure of words in the Portuguese language.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be tasked with creating an "Inventive Dictionary." In this dictionary, students must include at least 10 primitive words and, from each of them, create three derived words: one prefixed, one suffixed, and one compound. For each derived word created, students must define a meaning based on the primitive word.

Students will also need to write a short story using all the words from their "Inventive Dictionary." The story does not need to be long but must make sense and use all the words in its plot.

Required Materials:

• Paper and pencil for notes.
• Physical and/or online dictionaries for reference.
• Digital resources for the final production of the "Inventive Dictionary" and its story.

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students and explain the project's objective and process.

2. Students begin by choosing their primitive words and start thinking of ways to derive new words from them.

3. Each group creates the derived words and their definitions, compiling all the words and definitions in their "Inventive Dictionary."

4. After creating the words and the dictionary, groups start working on their stories, incorporating all the words from the dictionary.

5. When the stories are ready, each group will make a presentation to the class, reading their story and explaining the words they created.

6. Finally, students must produce a report on the project, which will include the Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

The students' "Inventive Dictionary" must be a well-organized document containing all primitive words and their derived words accompanied by their definitions. It will be delivered in a digital format, which can be created with any text editing tool, such as Word or Google Docs.

Story:

The story written using the words from the dictionary must be creative, engaging, and correctly use all the words created by the group. It must also be delivered in a digital format.

Report:

The report should be a comprehensive document reflecting the group's experience during the project. It should include an introduction, explaining why the group chose the specific words; the development, describing how the derived words were created and how the story was written; and a conclusion, discussing what they learned from doing the project. The report should end with the bibliography, indicating the resources the students used for research throughout the project.

By the end of this activity, students will have enhanced their technical and socio-emotional skills while delving deeper into the knowledge of the structure of the Portuguese language.
