Introduction to the Theme

In our Portuguese language, words do not arise out of nowhere. They are often formed from other words, either by adding prefixes or suffixes, or even other words. This is how primitive and derived words emerge, which are fundamental to the structure of our language.

Primitive words are those that give rise to other words and do not derive from any other term in the language. For example, the word 'pedra' (stone) is a primitive term.

Derived words, on the other hand, are those that originate from other words, the primitive terms. For example, the word 'pedreira' (quarry) is a derived word, as it originates from the primitive term 'pedra' (stone).

The Importance and Application of the Theme

Studying primitive and derived words is not just a linguistic curiosity. It is an important skill for understanding how our language is structured and how words are formed.

Furthermore, understanding word formation can help in interpreting texts, writing academic papers, and even learning new languages, as many terms in other languages are also formed by derivation.

Practical Activity – 'Word Hunt: Primitive and Derived'

Project Objective

The project aims to empower students to identify and differentiate primitive and derived words, as well as to understand the process of forming these words. Additionally, the project seeks to develop collaboration, communication, and time management skills.

Project Description

In this project, students, in groups of 3 to 5 members, must carry out a 'Word Hunt' in books, magazines, websites, among other resources. The goal is to find and catalog primitive words and their corresponding derived words. Each group must find and catalog a total of 50 primitive words and, for each one, at least one derived word.

Necessary Materials

• Books, magazines, newspapers, websites, etc., for searching the words.
• Paper cards or a digital document to create the catalog of the found words.
• Pens, pencils, or digital resources for writing on the catalog.

Project Step-by-Step

1. Students must divide into groups of 3 to 5 members.

2. Each group must search and catalog 50 primitive words and, for each one, at least one derived word. The words can be searched in any reading material such as books, magazines, and websites.

3. When finding a primitive word, they must write the primitive term on the card or digital document and, next to it, the derived words they found.

4. After collecting the words, each group must analyze the collected words, identifying those that were derived by adding a prefix, a suffix, or another word (compound words).

5. Based on the collection and analysis done, each group must prepare a textual report containing:

   • Introduction: In this section, the group must present the project theme, its relevance, and objectives.
   • Development: Here, the group explains the theory of primitive and derived words, details how the activity was carried out, the methodology used, and presents the collected and analyzed words.
   • Conclusion: In this part, students must conclude the project, highlighting the main points and learnings from the activity.
   • Bibliography: Finally, students must list all sources consulted during the activity, including books, magazines, websites, etc.

The project should be developed over a month, with an estimated working time of five to ten hours for each student.
