Theoretical Introduction

In the Portuguese language, each sound or noise is called a phoneme. Letters, on the other hand, are the graphic symbols we use to represent these sounds in writing. We can have several letters corresponding to the same phoneme, and this is called phonetic variation. For example, the sound /s/ can be represented by the letter 's', but it can also be represented by the letters 'c', 'ç', and 'ss'. Understanding the difference between phonemes and letters is essential for the comprehension of the Portuguese language and its idiosyncrasies.

In speech, phonemes are emitted continuously, without clear pauses. On the other hand, in writing, words are clearly separated and individualized. These differences between speech and writing are important for us to understand how the transition from orality to writing modifies the functioning of the language.

Furthermore, the interdisciplinarity between Linguistics and History is present in this project, as we analyze the evolution of the language over time and how communication forms have transformed to meet the needs of peoples.

Contextualization

Language is one of the most powerful tools that human beings possess. The ability to communicate ideas, feelings, and knowledge is what allows us to live in society. The Portuguese language, like all others, is an evolution of the communication forms used by our ancestors. Over the centuries, the Portuguese language has transformed, adapting to social and technological changes.

In this sense, understanding the concepts of phonemes and letters, and comprehending the differences between speech and writing, helps us better understand our own language and communicate our ideas more effectively. It also helps us understand the evolution of the Portuguese language and how it adapts and changes to meet the communicative needs of speakers.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Phonemes and Letters Hunt"

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' knowledge of the Portuguese language, exploring the differences between phonemes and letters and comparing the differences between writing and speech.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will explore the diversity of the Portuguese language, identifying the prevalence of phonemes in different texts and recording the diversity of letters that can represent the same phoneme.

Additionally, students will also analyze the differences between speech and writing, transcribing everyday conversations and comparing them with written language.

The project requires a total of over 12 hours of work for each student, including research, analysis, transcription, writing the final report, and preparing the presentation.

Required Materials

• Books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, song lyrics, etc.
• Audio recorder
• Pens and paper for notes
• Computer with internet access for research

Activity Steps

1. Research: Start by collecting a variety of texts – prose, poetry, newspaper articles, blog posts, song lyrics, etc. Make sure the texts are diverse to have a comprehensive scope of the Portuguese language.

2. Text Analysis: Identify the most frequent phonemes in each text and record the different letters used to represent them.

3. Transcription: Now, record some everyday conversations. Transcribe these dialogues and compare them with the written language of the collected texts. Make notes on the differences between speech and writing.

4. Group Discussion: Discuss your findings with your group. Make conjectures about why these differences exist and how they relate to the evolution of the Portuguese language.

5. Report Writing: Each group must produce a written report. The report should include the following points.

   • Introduction: Description of the topic and its relevance, importance of the project, and clear objectives of what was accomplished.
   • Development: Theoretical exposition on phonemes, letters, differences between speech and writing. Detailed description of all activities carried out, with description of the texts used, transcription procedures, analyses performed, and results found.
   • Conclusion: Return to the initial objectives, explanation of what was learned, most interesting discoveries, and general conclusions about the differences between speech and writing, phonemes, and letters.
   • Bibliography: References of the materials and sources used for the project.

6. Final Presentation: Each group must present their findings to the class. The presentation should include an explanation of their methodologies, findings, and conclusions.

Through this practical activity, students will deepen their understanding of the topics of phonemes and letters, differences between speech and writing, as well as exercise socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, and proactivity. The written document will be crucial to consolidate learning and offer the opportunity for reflection on the project experience.
