Reading is one of the most valuable tools available to humanity, it is the foundation for learning and intellectual development. In this sense, reading and text comprehension are fundamental skills for anyone, as it allows them to express themselves, learn and interact with the world around them more effectively.
However, reading is not simply about decoding symbols and words, it involves understanding the literal meaning of what is written and interpreting the hidden meanings, underlying ideas, feelings and intentions of the authors. To do this, understanding how texts are structured, how ideas are connected and how arguments are constructed becomes essential.
Therefore, developing reading and comprehension skills is of paramount importance in the academic trajectory and also in life outside school. This includes understanding different genres of text such as scientific articles, literary novels, newspaper articles, instruction manuals, information on the web and many other textual formats that we encounter daily.
Learning to read and understand takes time and practice, but the rewards are immense. Once you develop this skill, you will have access to a much wider range of information, ideas and perspectives. This competence can open doors to a better understanding of the world, to new job opportunities and to lifelong learning.

Practical Activity: Reading and Comprehension Marathon
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to encourage reading, promote textual comprehension and develop teamwork skills. It will be a challenge, in the form of a marathon, where students will read, interpret and present different textual genres.
Detailed Description of the Project
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will have to work together on reading and understanding four different textual genres: 1) Short Story; 2) News; 3) Game Instructions and 4) Comics. After reading and discussing in groups, they will produce an explanatory report on each text and an oral presentation. This activity is planned to be carried out in approximately 12 hours, distributed over weeks.
Necessary Materials
- Printed or digital texts of the proposed genres.
- Notebooks and pens for notes.
- Material for making slides (optional).
Detailed step-by-step to carry out the Activity

Group formation and activity presentation: Divide students into groups and explain the objectives of the project. Provide them with the texts of the proposed genres and establish a timeline for completing the tasks.

Reading and interpreting: Students should read and discuss the texts in a group. They should identify the characteristics of each genre, such as: textual structure, vocabulary, writing style, etc.

Report preparation: Students will produce a report for each text genre read, explaining its characteristics, identifying the conjunctions and the relationship they establish between parts of the text: addition, opposition, time, cause, condition, purpose. In addition, they should describe how the reading and interpretation process took place within the group.

Oral presentation: Each group will give an oral presentation to the class, explaining the characteristics of each textual genre and how the reading and comprehension process took place.
Project Delivery
Students must submit the reports and make the oral presentation according to the established schedule. These deliverables are linked to the textual genres worked on and allow for the realization and evaluation of the learning of the concepts addressed. The writing of the reports follows the format: "Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography", as explained in the introduction of this project.
In the introduction, contextualize the work and the objective of reading that textual genre. In the development, detail the reading experience, the characteristics of the textual genre, the use of conjunctions and the relationship between the parts of the text. Conclude by reviewing the main points, demonstrating the group's learning and the discoveries made. And finally, list the bibliographies, such as books, web pages, videos that were used as consultation sources during the project.
