Verbs: Introduction

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Verbs constitute one of the fundamental classes of words in the Portuguese language, as they are responsible for expressing actions, states, changes of state, natural phenomena, among others. They are the central word of the sentence, directly linked to the subject performing the action. In the Portuguese language, verbs have tenses, moods, and voices, which serve to express, respectively, the moment when the action takes place, the speaker's attitude towards the action, and the relationship between the subject and the action.

Verbs in Portuguese are inflected for tense, mood, and person. Tense indicates when the action occurs (present, past, or future). Mood indicates the speaker's attitude towards the action, whether it is a fact (indicative mood), a possibility (subjunctive mood), or an order (imperative mood). Person indicates who performs the action, it can be the first person (I, we), the second person (you), or the third person (he, she, they).

Furthermore, verbs can be classified as regular (those that follow standard conjugation models) and irregular (those that undergo changes in the root or endings during conjugation). These inflections and classifications make verbs one of the most complex and rich topics in Portuguese grammar.

Contextualization

The ability to identify, understand, and correctly use verbs is a crucial element for effective communication in Portuguese. It allows us to express our ideas, desires, actions, and feelings clearly and precisely. Moreover, understanding how verbs work contributes to the development of other language skills, such as writing, reading, and text interpretation.

In the school environment, mastering verbs is essential for producing coherent and cohesive texts, as well as for understanding content from other disciplines that also use the Portuguese language as a teaching medium. Outside of school, the correct use of verbs is essential for efficient communication in various situations, such as talking with friends, requesting information, arguing ideas, among others.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Time Travelers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to become fluent in the use of verbs, highlighting their understanding of verb tenses (past, present, and future) and the proper inflection of verbs in agreement with personal pronouns. The project should be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students, with an estimated duration of 5 to 10 hours per participant and a one-month delivery time.

Detailed Project Description

In the "Time Travelers" project, students will create a collective work in the form of a comic book, with three different stories, one set in the past, another in the present, and the last one in the future. For each story, they will have to use the appropriate verb conjugation for the time in which the story is taking place.

Required Materials

  1. Pencil and paper for the initial draft.
  2. Graphic Design Program (e.g., Canva, Adobe Spark, etc.) for creating the digital comic book.
  3. Books and/or websites for verb conjugation reference.
  4. Computer with internet access for research and comic book creation.

Step by Step

1. Defining the stories and task division

Within each group, students will define the three stories that will be narrated in the comic book. Each story should be set in a different time: past, present, and future. Additionally, students should divide the tasks among group members for project completion.

2. Developing the stories

Each story should be written on a separate sheet of paper, respecting the verbal tense in which it takes place. Students should pay attention to the correct verb conjugation and agreement between verbs and the subjects of the actions.

3. Creating the drawings

With the stories written, students will create the drawings that will compose the comic book. These drawings can be done by hand and then digitized, or created directly in a graphic design program.

4. Assembling the comic book

With the stories written and the drawings ready, students will assemble the comic book. At this stage, they should pay attention to the order of the stories and the layout of the panels on the page.

5. Review and correction

Finally, students should do a final review of the comic book, correcting any errors and refining the work.

Project Delivery

The project delivery should be in two formats: the digital comic book and a written report.

The written report should include:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application, and the project's objective.
  2. Development: Explanation of verb theory, the activity in detail, and the methodology used. Discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: Sources used for the project.

At the end of this project, we expect that students have not only improved their technical skills regarding the understanding and application of verbs but also worked on socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
