Dictionary: Words in Context

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

A dictionary is, perhaps, one of the most important learning tools in the Portuguese language. It is like a map that guides us through the vast world of words, helping us to understand meanings, usage, origins, and much more.

Each entry in a dictionary not only provides the meaning of a word, but also its pronunciation, correct spelling, and example usage within a sentence, providing a rich vocabulary understanding. Moreover, the dictionary helps us to understand that the same word can have multiple meanings, depending on the context in which it is used.

But understanding these contexts and deciphering the correct meaning can sometimes be a challenge. And it is precisely by applying the use of the dictionary that we expect students to become more aware of the nuances of words and how they can change based on context.

Contextualization

Effective communication is a vital skill that we all need, whether it's to express our ideas, feelings, or even to understand others. And the foundation of communication is our vocabulary — the words that we use and understand.

Knowing the meanings of words and understanding how they are used in different contexts is essential for communicating ideas and feelings precisely. This avoids misunderstandings and improves our ability to understand and learn new information. And this is where using a dictionary becomes essential.

Suggested Resources

Students can use the following resources to build upon and delve deeper into the topic:

  1. The Online Portuguese Dictionary: This is an excellent resource for exploring the world of words in Portuguese.

  2. Michaelis On-line: Another valuable online resource for looking up the meanings of words.

  3. Video on how to use the dictionary: This video, aimed at a children's audience, provides a simple and clear overview of how to use a dictionary.

  4. Book "The Fantastic World of the Dictionary": This book provides a beautiful introduction to using dictionaries for elementary school students.

Remember, the best teacher is learning itself. So explore, discover, and learn!

Practical Activity: "Word Explorers"

Project Objective

  • Understand how to use a dictionary efficiently.
  • Understand that words can have multiple meanings depending on context.
  • Work in teams, collaborating and sharing discoveries.

Detailed Description of the Project

Groups of students will become word explorers. They will choose 5 words and research each one in at least two different dictionaries (online or physical). They will have to identify and record different meanings and usage examples of these words in different contexts.

The students will then create a "Word Map," where they will illustrate the chosen words and their meanings through drawings, collages, writings, and other means. In the final part, they will present their work to the class, discussing the chosen words and the discoveries they made.

Required Materials

  • Dictionaries (online or physical)
  • Poster board or large cardboard
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, crayons
  • Scissors, glue
  • Magazines for clippings, if available

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for Completing the Activity

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group must choose 5 words to research. Words can be randomly chosen, suggested by the teacher, or taken from a book that the class is reading.
  3. Students will research their chosen words in at least two different dictionaries, noting the different meanings and usage examples they find.
  4. With the information they have gathered, students will create a "Word Map" on a large poster board or cardboard.
  5. Each word should be represented on the map in a creative way, including its meanings and usage examples. This can be done through drawings, magazine clippings, writings, and other means.
  6. After completing the map, each group will present their work to the class, explaining the words they chose, the different meanings they found, and the contexts for their usage.
  7. The teacher will take notes on the feedback for each group.

After completing the map and presentation, each group will write a report, according to the following guidelines:

  • Introduction: Present the words chosen and why they were selected. Explain the objective of the project and its relevance for learning Portuguese.
  • Development: Explain in detail the process of researching the words in the dictionaries, creating the "Word Map," and presenting to the class. Discuss the different meanings found for each word and the contexts for their usage.
  • Conclusion: Summarize what was learned, both about the words and their contexts, and about the process of working in a team. Explain what you liked most about the project and what could be improved.
  • Bibliography: List the dictionaries and other resources used for the research, whether books, websites, or videos.

This project should be completed within one week. Remember that it is a team effort, which implies dividing responsibilities and collaborating among group members.

The successful completion of the project will demonstrate students' understanding of using dictionaries and the contextualization of words, as well as teamwork skills, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.
