Each image carries a meaning, a story, and an intention behind its creation. Through this project on 'Visual Artistic Expression,' we will delve into the fascinating universe of visual art and understand how this universal language is used to communicate ideas, emotions, and narratives.

Visual artistic expression can take many forms, each with its own origins, techniques, and styles. Painting, for example, is one of the oldest forms of visual art, ranging from prehistoric cave paintings to modern techniques such as oil painting and watercolor. Sculpture is another form of visual art that involves creating three-dimensional works, which can be made from a variety of materials, including stone, metal, wood, or clay. Photography and cinema, in turn, are more recent forms of visual art that emerged with technology. In all cases, visual artworks are much more than mere objects or images; they are creations that have the power to move, inspire, and challenge those who appreciate them.

'Visual Artistic Expression' is a fundamental theme for the Arts discipline in Elementary Education, as it allows students to understand and appreciate the diversity and richness of visual expression forms. Moreover, the study of visual art helps develop students' creativity and imagination, as well as essential skills such as observation, analysis, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.

Visual art is not only found in museums or galleries; it is everywhere around us. It can be found in books, magazines, films, advertising, video games, fashion, architecture, and even on our smartphones. Visual art plays a fundamental role in our society and culture, as it helps shape how we see the world and express ourselves in it. In this sense, learning about visual art is also learning about ourselves, about others, and about the world we live in.

• 'The Story of Art' by E. H. Gombrich: This book is a worldwide reference and offers a comprehensive view of the history of art, from prehistory to modern art.

• Website 'History of Arts' (https://www.historiadasartes.com/): This Brazilian website is a rich source of information on different forms of visual art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and cinema, with sections dedicated to Brazilian art and contemporary art.

• Documentary 'Art of Brazil: A History in Three Colors' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbNQzJd7_K8): This BBC documentary, available on YouTube, explores Brazilian visual art, from indigenous art to contemporary art.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'The Journey of Visual Art: From Classical to Contemporary'

Project Objective: Develop skills for research, analysis, and discussion on visual artworks, exploring different styles, periods, and artists, and produce a virtual art exhibition based on the acquired knowledge.

Detailed Project Description:

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last one week. Students will be responsible for exploring the history of visual art, from classical art to contemporary art. They should research and analyze artworks from different styles and periods, by national and international artists.

Students will create a virtual art exhibition, choosing six artworks that represent the evolution of visual expression over time.

Materials Needed:

• Computer or smartphone with internet access
• Notebook and pens
• Image and text editing software (Microsoft Word, Google Slides, etc.)

Activity Steps:

1. Research and Selection of Artworks (1-2 hours): Students should research online about different styles and periods of visual art, and select six artworks that represent this evolution. Websites like 'Google Arts & Culture,' 'Virtual Museum of Brazil,' and 'Art Project' are suggested for artwork research.

2. Analysis of Artworks (1-2 hours): Students should analyze each selected artwork, studying its historical context, style, author, and technique used. They should take notes of their observations for later use.

3. Creation of Virtual Art Exhibition (2-3 hours): Using image and/or text editing software, students should organize the selected artworks into a presentation, including an image of each artwork, a brief description, and its analysis.

4. Writing the Project Report (2-3 hours): Students should write a project report, containing an introduction to the theme of 'Visual Artistic Expression,' the description and analysis of the selected artworks, conclusions about the evolution of visual art based on their findings, and the bibliography used. The introduction should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application, as well as the project's objective. The development should explain the theory behind the project's central theme, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results. The conclusion should summarize the main points of the work, highlighting the learnings and conclusions drawn about the evolution of visual expression based on their findings. The bibliography should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.

5. Presentation of the Exhibition and Report (Variable Duration): Groups should present their virtual art exhibition and report to the class, sharing their discoveries and learnings.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the week, groups must deliver the created virtual art exhibition and the written report. They should be ready to present and discuss their findings, showing how visual art has evolved over time and how it is expressed in different ways in different contexts. The exhibition should be accessible, easy to understand, and well-organized, and the report should be clear, well-written, and demonstrate all the work and research done during the project.
