Contextualization
The central theme of this project is the growth of cities and their relationship with the transformation of the landscape by human work. This is a phenomenon that has occurred throughout human history, but has had a huge boost with the development of agriculture and, mainly, with the industrialization process.
Initially, the first human groupings were nomadic, moving according to climatic conditions and the search for food. Over time, humans learned to master agricultural techniques, enabling the emergence of the first villages. Subsequently, with the development of agriculture and production techniques, human groupings grew and concentrated more and more, giving rise to cities.
In the process of city formation, there is an intense transformation of the landscape, as it is necessary to alter the environment for the construction of houses, roads, industries, and other necessary structures. This transformation process is continuous and accompanies the population growth and technological development.
Importance
Understanding this process is essential to understand how humans modify the landscape and how this impacts people's lives and the environment. In addition, we can see that the growth of cities is directly linked to the technological and economic development of a society.
Studying the growth of cities also allows reflections to be made on the consequences of this phenomenon, such as uncontrolled urbanization, lack of urban planning, the need for efficient sanitation systems, increased pollution, among other aspects.
Understanding these transformations and their implications is essential for us to think about sustainable solutions for the development of cities in the future.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Building and Analyzing the Growth of a City
Project Objective:
The objective of this activity is for students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, to build a model of a growing city using recyclable materials. In addition, the groups should analyze the city's growth, reflecting on the impacts of urbanization on the natural landscape and the environment.
Detailed Project Description:
To achieve this objective, each group will design and build a three-dimensional model of a city that shows gradual growth and transformation over time. The model should start as a rural village and gradually transform into a developing city, corresponding to the various stages of urbanization. At each stage, students should highlight the landscape transformations due to human work.
This project will last approximately 5 to 10 hours per student and will extend over a month to allow enough time to plan, build the model, and prepare the final report.
Required Materials:
- Cardboard or styrofoam for the model base
- Recyclable materials for building the buildings (cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, etc.)
- Acrylic paint, colored pens, fabrics, wool, and any other materials for decoration.
- Computer and internet access for research.
Step by Step:
- Research: Students should start by researching the growth and development of cities, based on the suggested materials or other reliable sources of information.
- Planning: Next, students should plan their city model: how it will be, which elements will compose the landscape, how it will change over time, etc.
- Construction: Once the planning is ready, students should start building the model using recyclable materials.
- Analysis and Reflection: During and after construction, students should reflect and analyze the city's transformation process and understand how these changes impact the landscape and the environment.
- Report: Finally, students should prepare a detailed report on the project, including what they learned during the process, conclusions, and bibliography used.
Project Deliverables:
At the end of the project, groups must deliver the city model and a written report, following the structure:
- Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
- Development: The student must explain the theory behind the growth of cities, the activity carried out in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
- Conclusions: The student must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
- Bibliography used.
The report should be a clear representation of the work done and show the group's perceptions of urbanization and its impacts. It should detail each phase of the city's growth represented in the model and explain what each of these phases represents in terms of impact on the landscape and the environment.
