Cartographic representation is an essential tool for understanding the world around us. It consists of portraying the Earth's surface or a part of it in a two-dimensional form. Have you ever stopped to think about how a map is made? How can we portray the Earth, a spherical shape, on a plane? This is where the importance of cartographic projection comes in. Projection is a process of transforming geographic coordinates, directions, and distances into a flat surface.

This is not a simple process and requires the use of scales. A scale is a mathematical relationship that expresses how much smaller the map is than the actual area it represents. They can be represented in two ways: numerical and graphic. The numerical scale expresses the proportion relationship between distances on the map and in reality through numbers, while the graphic scale visually represents this relationship using a straight line divided into segments.

Importance and Real-World Applications

Cartographic representation and scale are fundamental tools not only for geographers but also for anyone who uses a map. They help us understand space and the location of different places in the world. For example, when planning a trip, it is essential to understand the scale of a map to assess the distances between different destinations.

Furthermore, these tools are used in various professions such as architecture and urban planning, where scales and map reading allow for planning the construction of buildings and the organization of cities. In meteorology, map analysis helps predict the weather and understand weather patterns. In biology, maps are used to study species distribution.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Building the World: A Detailed Look at Cartographic Representations and Scales"

Project Objective:

The project aims to provide students with a deep and practical understanding of cartographic representations and the use of scales. Students will work in groups to create their own maps and learn to measure distances on them. Additionally, this project also seeks to encourage teamwork, group decision-making, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will be tasked with creating a detailed and accurate map of a part of their school's territory, measuring real distances and applying the concept of scales to reproduce a faithful cartographic representation. In addition to understanding the theoretical concepts of Geography, this project will require students to apply basic knowledge of Mathematics for the correct use of scales.

Required Materials:

  1. Graph paper
  2. Pencils and erasers
  3. Ruler
  4. Protractor
  5. Compass
  6. Tape measure
  7. Online resources for research (computers or tablets)

Project Steps:

Phase 1: Research and Planning (3 hours)

Students should start the project by researching cartographic representations and scales, exploring how they are used in map creation. Students should prepare a brief presentation of these concepts for the group.

Phase 2: Measurement and Recording (4 hours)

The group should choose a specific part of the school's territory to map. It can be a courtyard, garden, soccer field, or even the school building. They should measure and record all distances, angles, and relevant details for creating the map.

Phase 3: Map Creation (4 hours)

Using the collected measurements and the knowledge acquired about scales, the group should sketch the map on graph paper. All important features should be included, and distances should be represented proportionally according to the chosen scale.

Phase 4: Finalization and Presentation (2 hours)

Groups should finalize their cartographic representations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to the scale. Additionally, they should prepare a brief map presentation for the class, explaining their methodology and the decisions made during the process.

Phase 5: Report Writing (8 hours)

Using writing skills, the group should prepare a detailed project report, describing each step and justifying the decisions made. The report should be divided into four sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The report should reflect not only the knowledge acquired but also time management skills, effective communication, and critical thinking.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Finalized Map: Accurate scale and cartographic representation of the chosen territory, demonstrating practical understanding of the studied concepts.

  2. Written Report: Should consist of four detailed sections:

  • Introduction: Students should introduce the topic of cartographic representations and scales, explaining why it is important and how it was used in the project.

  • Development: Students should describe how they measured and mapped the chosen area, explaining each decision made and its justification.

  • Conclusion: Students should comment on what they learned throughout the project and how it can be applied in other situations in the future.

  • Bibliography: Students should list all research sources used during the project development.

This practical activity, besides providing significant learning about cartographic representation and scales, also fosters a range of socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, problem-solving ability, and proactivity.
